NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (4-1) lost for the first time this season in their first road match of the year at Union University (4-1) 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 20-25, 22-25) at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.

THE SERIES

Though the schools were conference members in the NAIA Era with the TranSouth and other conferences, the Trojans lead the NCAA Era series 5-4.

THE MATCH

Union opened the first set with three consecutive points and never trailed in the set. Despite the Trojans never gaining the lead it was close and the final margin was the largest at 25-19.

The Trojans flipped the script in the second set and took a 7-2 advantage and led by as many as 10 points at three separate points in the match. Trevecca settled for a nine-point win (25-16).

Despite an early 8-3 Bulldog lead, set three was close throughout. Trevecca went ahead 15-3 only to see Union finish the set on a 12-5 run, winning 25-20.

The fourth saw to swings early. The Bulldogs opened with a 9-3 edge forcing two Trojan timeouts. After the second timeout, Trevecca went on an 8-1 run to pull ahead 11-10. With Trevecca leading 22-20 the Bulldogs called a timeout. Following the timeout, Union went on a 5-0 run to take the set and match.

The Trojans hit .230 for the match while the Bulldogs hit .216, but Union collected 49 kills to the Trojans 43. Both teams served well with the Bulldogs holding a slight 10-9 edge in aces.

UP NEXT

Trevecca heads to Cleveland, Tenn. for the weekend where they will play in the Lee University Invitational. Friday the Trojans play Montevallo (1-3) at 8 AM and Erskine (2-2) at 1:30 PM. Saturday it's No. 2 (AVCA) Washburn (4-0) at 12:15 PM and Lee (1-3) at 6 PM. Lee is 5-1 versus TNU in the NCAA Era. Trevecca and Erskine have played once, a win for the Trojans at the 2021 Thrasher Classic. Trevecca and Washburn will meet for the first time in volleyball. Montevallo and Trevecca met once in the NCAA Era, a 2019 TNU win at the UAH Classic.
