Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Launch Four Home runs in 19-11 Win vs Union: Host Hillsdale Friday

Box Score

NASHVILLE – No. 5 (NCBWA) Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (20-4, 6-2 Great Midwest) defeated visiting Union University, 19-11, at Jackson Field.

The Trojans are ranked No. 5 in this week's National College Baseball Writers Association (NCWBA) poll and No. 8 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll.

The 2021-2022 version of the Trojans is living up to the #MASHVILLE moniker. With their four home runs tonight, this year's team owns 38 home runs in only 24 games. That's three more than the 35 the 2020-2021 hit in 49 games on the way to the NCAA Division II College World Series.

Leading the way is newcomer Roland Ryan. Counting his three home runs today, he's hit nine (9) home runs in the last 10 games. He's hit 11 home runs this year in 16 games. That's two more than anyone hit last year more than anyone since current assistant Sam Mang hit 13 in 2017-2018 season.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES

Trevecca leads the series with Union during the NCAA era 10-2. The Trojans swept the season series and have won four in a row in the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Union jumped out first with a run in the top of the first. The Trojans responded with a two-run first inning, on a two-run home run from Roland Ryan. This started a back-and-forth affair in the early innings. Union took the lead back with a two-run second inning for a 3-2 lead, which is the score Trevecca won by in the first meeting a week ago in Jackson. Trevecca answered with a two-run second as well for a 4-3 lead through two complete. Neither team scored in the third, but Union restarted the offensive outpouring with a three-run fourth and a 6-4 lead.

The Trojans turned the game in their favor with an eight-run fourth to establish a 12-6 lead. The Bulldogs helped the Trojans with four walks and a hit-by-pitch. The inning featured a unique play. With the bases loaded Bryant Goolsby popped the ball up high and it landed just in front of home plate, the umpires called ruled it an infield fly, meaning Goolsby was automatically out, but the Trojan runners advanced. The Union catcher grabbed the loose ball and tagged home to get the force out, but Jordan Jackson crossed home anyway. The umpires ruled the force was not in play due to the infield fly rule and Jackson was safe and the other two baserunners advanced to second and third. In the inning, the Trojans scored their eight runs on two hits. They were both doubles. The first was from Henry Mosley who drove in two. The second was from David Milam, who drove in three.

Union added four runs in the sixth to cut the Trojan lead to two, 12-10. In the bottom of the seventh, Trevecca plated five more runs including a three-run blast from Roland Ryan. Through seven innings the Trojans led 17-10. In the eighth Union added a run and Trevecca plated two more, including a third home run from Roland Ryan, for the 19-11 final.
