Trevecca Softball | Trojans Win Three in Kentucky; Headed to PFX Spring Games Next Week

OWENSBORO, Ky. – Trevecca Nazarene University softball (8-5) completed play in the weather-shortened Blue Bridge Classic on Sunday at Jack C. Fischer Park.

The Trojans played four of the six scheduled games. The Trojans defeated Northwood University (4-2) 1-0 and Slipper Rock (0-4) 14-3 on Saturday. On Sunday, Trevecca defeated Lindenwood University (6-3) 3-2, but fell to No. 8 University of Indianapolis (11-1), 8-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME ONE - Northwood

The Trojans benefitted from four Wolves' errors and scored their lone run on one hit. In the fifth, Adams reached on an error, then moved to second on a sacrifice by Alyssa Triner. Lenna Robinson bunted and reached on an error, allowing Adams to score. 

Ashlan Sensing (4-1) pitched a complete game shutout with five strikeouts. The freshmen allowed only four hits and two walks. 

GAME TWO – Slippery Rock

Trevecca jumped ahead 2-0 in the second when Megan Walker singled to drive in Sydney McCormick and Carly Sperlich. Slippery Rock plated three, taking the lead 3-2 after three innings of play. Trevecca waited till the sixth before turning the game with a seven-run at-bat for a 9-3 lead. Kendall Andrews homered with Carly Sperlich and Malone Thrift on base to put the Trojans up 5-3. Anna Bennett singled with Lenna Robinson and Megan Walker on board, driving them in for a 7-3 lead. Kelsey McPeters Trevecca added five in the seventh, Sydney McCormick drove in Victoria Clark with a single then Alyssa Triner drove in McCormick with a single. Anna Bennett reached again, this time on an error, driving in Megan Walker. This time, Kelsey McPeters drove in two more on a single plating Bennett and Triner.

Hannah Caffey pitched a complete game for the win and had four strikeouts.

GAME THREE - Lindenwood

Lindenwood jumped ahead 1-0 with a run in the first, but the Trojans answered in the fourth to level the game 1-1 on a Jaylah Edmondson home run. A Lion run in the top of the seventh put the game in danger, but the Trojans responded in the bottom half of the inning. Lauren Moore led off with a pinch-hit walk and Malone Thrift came on to pinch run. Carly Sperlich doubled with no one out. Two outs later, Alyssa Triner drove in Malone Thrift for the tying run. Ashlan Sensing, pinch-hitting for Lenna Robinson, singled to drive in Sperlich for the winning run.

Hannah Caffey picked up her second win of the weekend with another complete game.

GAME FOUR – No. 8 UIndy

Trevecca took the lead with a two-run top of the second. Lauren Moore reached on a one-out single and scored on a two-out single from Sydney McCormick. Megan Walker singled home Jaylah Edmondson, who walked moving Moore to second earlier. The No. 8 Hounds answered with four of their own in the second and a single run in the third and fourth. They added two more in the fifth. Trevecca plated their final run in the seventh.

CIRCLE AND BOX NOTES

GAME ONE - Northwood

Kendall Andrews got the Trojan's lone hit and added a stolen base.

GAME TWO – Slippery Rock

Trevecca had 13 hits and played clean defensively. Four Trojans had multi-hit games, led by Anna Bennett going 3-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Kelsey McPeters was 3- 4 with a run scored and four RBI. Lenna Robinson was 2-4 with a walk and three stolen bases.

GAME THREE - Lindenwood

Hannah Caffey allowed two runs, one earned while striking out two. Of her 43 pitches, 36 were for a strike. Grace Kirby is the only Trojan with more than one hit, one of those a double. Carly Sperlich also doubled.

GAME FOUR – No. 8 UIndy

The Trojans had five hits but helped the Hounds with three errors defensively. Only five of the UIndy runs were earned.

UP NEXT

Trevecca takes a week off before heading to Florida for the 2022 PFX Spring Games in Winter Haven. Trevecca opens against Lindenwood, it's the third meeting of the season for the two teams, who are now 1-1. In all, the Trojans are scheduled to play 10 games from March 6-11.

The Trojans play at home on March 19 when they open Great Midwest play versus Kentucky Wesleyan College.
