CEDARVILLE, Ohio. – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (19-11, 11-6 Great Midwest) finished up the regular season at Cedarville University (13-14, 1-6 Great Midwest) losing to the Yellow Jackets 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 19-25, 19-25) on Saturday afternoon in the Callan Athletic Center.

THE SERIES

Despite the loss today, the Trojans have won three of the last four matches against Cedarville, with the Yellow Jackets controlling a 17-7 lead in the all-time series.

THE FLOW

The teams traded the first six points until the Trojans gained the upper hand at 4-3. The lead was short-lived and the only Trevecca enjoyed in the opener as two different runs by the Yellow Jackets put the set out of reach. A 4-0 run tripled the Cedarville lead from 12-10 to 16-10, while the hosts put the set on ice following a 5-0 run which ended with a 22-14 lead. Cedarville secured the opener, 25-17. 

Through much of the early stages of the second, the Trojans enjoyed a three-point lead. After consecutive attack errors came after a Cedarville kill, the Yellow Jackets pushed its only lead of the frame to 12-10. From there the Trojans managed to regain the momentum and took the second, 25-19.

The first two points went to the Trojans in the third, before the Yellow Jackets figured out the Trevecca attack. A 9-2 run saw the hosts on top by five and they never looked back. Trevecca pulled within three points late in the set, but the Yellow Jackets closed out the frame with the final three points, 25-19.

The fourth set only saw the Trojans lead at 1-0 off an Emma Titus kill. The Yellow Jackets quickly responded in the frame and led 9-5. Despite three straight attack errors and forcing a tie at 14-14, the Yellow Jackets staved off the Trojan rally. From there, Cedarville separated with four straight points, ultimately winning the fourth, 25-19.

THE NOTES

Ellie Buffler bagged double-digit kills for the 22nd time this season. That makes just eight contests in which the Trojan senior had less than 10 kills. Emma Green led the Trojans in hitting with a .385 mark. Green finished with five kills, three digs, and four block assists.

SEASON REVIEW

The Great Midwest coaches picked Trevecca to finish second in the G-MAC South Division, and for most of the season, that is where the Trojans have been. Trevecca opened the season, winning all four matches in the second annual Ray Thrasher Classic. The Trojans added a five-match win streak all in league play midway through the season, knocking off KWC, Ursuline, Lake Erie, Malone, and Walsh. The last two on the road. Emilee McDonald was named the Great Midwest Defender of the Week twice this season (09/19/22, 10/02/22). Ellie Buffler was named the Great Midwest Player of the Week (10/10/22). Ellie Buffler was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Player of the Week (10/11/22).

UP NEXT

The Trojans head to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament as the South Division's No. 2 seed. Trevecca faces Cedarville for the third time this season when the G-MAC quarterfinals begin on November 10.

The Trojans and Yellow Jackets split the regular season series with both sides protecting their home court in four sets.

The two schools have met two times before in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament, both in the conference championship. The Yellow Jackets won the 2012 edition of the tournament while the Trojans finished off Cedarville with a sweep in the 2015 finals.
