Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Top Panthers; Visit Cedarville Saturday

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (19-10, 11-5 Great Midwest) defeated Ohio Dominican University (11-18, 6-10 Great Midwest) in five sets 3-2 (25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 11-25, 17-15), on Friday night in Alumni Hall.

THE SERIES

Trevecca swept the season series over the Panthers and has now won the past three meetings. The Trojans own a 7-4 advantage over the Panthers all-time.

THE FLOW

The match started with both sides struggling to find an offensive rhythm. Four of the opening six points were won off errors. Back-to-back Panther points, highlighted by the only service ace of the set, gave ODU its largest lead of the opener at 5-3. The Trojans tied the set at 5-5 and regained the lead for good after a Maddie Wilds kill at 8-7. The Trojans closed the opening set on a 6-1 run to win, 25-19.

The Trojans never trailed in the second set after jumping out to the early 3-0 advantage. Despite the Panthers tying it at 16-16, and then later at 21-21, the Trojans had a 4-0 run to finish off the Panthers 25-21 in the frame.

Despite establishing an early lead in the third, the Trojans surrendered a few points off attack errors and allowed the Panthers to change the momentum. With the set tied, a 5-0 ODU run midway through the third turned things sour for the Trojans. Ohio Dominican pushed forward for a 25-19 set win.

Riding their high from set three, Ohio Dominican cruised in set four by taking six of the first seven points in the set. The Trojans called timeout down 6-1 and took two of the next three points out of the break. From there, however, it was all ODU as a 9-0 run put the set out of reach and the hosts won it 25-11.

The fifth set was decided late with the Panthers securing a three-point lead for much of the way. In fact, the Trojans had to fend off three match points to tie it at 14-14, before they could right the ship. After a fourth match point favored the Panthers at 15-14, the Trojans rallied for three straight points behind a block and consecutive kills to win the set 17-15 and the match.

THE NOTES

Emma Titus collected a match-high 15 kills which she paired with five digs and four block assists on the evening. Of late, Titus has stuffed the stat sheet with tonight's effort being her third consecutive match with double-digit kills. Titus had a season-high 16 kills in the win against Tiffin on September 10. Titus was supported by Ellie Buffler and Maddie Wilds who both collected nine kills. Sami Raley and Emilee McDonald both finished with seven kills for the Trojans. Buffler just missed the double-double with 16 digs while McDonald finished off the double-double with 34 assists and 16 digs.

UP NEXT

The final regular season match versus Cedarville University (12-14, 10-6 Great Midwest) is set for tomorrow at 12 p.m.

The Trojans have won the last three matches against Cedarville (including a four-set win on September 17 this season), with the Yellow Jackets controlling a 16-7 lead in the all-time series.
