Box Score MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (1-3) opened the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Classic with a 72-56 loss to the University of Mary (3-0) in Florida Tech's Charles and Ruth Clemente Center on Friday afternoon.
THE SERIES
The Trojans and Marauders had not met before today's matchup.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 7-3, the Trojans rallied back to tie the game at 9-9 (16:05). Zeke Grier, starting for the first time in his career, sank a pair of 3-pointers and Lawrence Brazil hit one in the run. Neither team scored again until Jaden Smallwood hit a layup to give the Trojans their first lead at 11-9 with 13:37 on the clock. With 6:50 to go in the half, the game was tied 22-22. From there the Mauraders began to gain some separation from the young Trojans, who were playing without two starters - Pete Lambesis and Jose Waring. Aside from a pair of Caleb Terry baskets, the last making it 26-29 (2:30), the Trojans went scoreless the rest of the half. It was a 18-4 run that changed the game. UMary posted a 40-26 halftime advantage.
It took more than five minutes for one of the teams to hit a field goal in the second half. Each team managed a pair of free throws before UMary's Treyton Mattern hit a field goal to make it 44-28 Marauders with 14:58 to go. With 11:19 to go UMary had pushed the lead to 21 (52-31) and despite a couple of Trojan bursts, the Marauders were not threatened.
THE PLAYERS
Caleb Terry just missed a double-double with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Terry had five blocks. Gus Davenport added a team-high 11 points off the bench while Connor Martin had eight points in 13 minutes played
THE TEAMS
The Trojans shot 34.5% (19-55) from the floor, 27.8% (10-36) from three-point range, and 61.5% (8-13) from the free-throw line.
UP NEXT
The Trojans take on Florida Tech (4-1) in the third-place game of the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Classic Saturday at 12:30 PM. It is the first meeting all-time between the two schools in men's basketball.
