Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Head to Ray Thrasher Invite 3-0 with Win at UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (3-0) knocked off the host, University of Alabama Huntsville Chargers (2-1), at the Alabama Huntsville Invitational in Spragins Hall on Saturday.

After winning the first two sets, UAH took a 2-1 lead. Trevecca responded, winning the final two sets for a significant road win.

THE SERIES

Alabama Huntsville leads the all-time series 19-4. The win breaks a six-match win streak in the series for UAH. The last win for the Trojans in the series came during a match at Lee University in 2015. The last time TNU won in Huntsville was in 1989, the first meeting for the two schools in volleyball.

THE MATCH

The early portion of the first set was a period of each team working to find their rhythm. Austyn Baldwin previewed her impact early with three kills for a 3-3 tie. UAH appeared to find their rhythm leading 12-8. A service error gave the Trojans and Chloee McDaniel the serve. McDaniel served the Trojans to six consecutive points and a 15-12 advantage. Trevecca led until Huntsville tied the match at 21-21. UAH eventually regained the lead 23-22. The set went to extra points with UAH having set-point twice. UAH had set point at 26-25, but Trevecca scored three straight to take the win. Austyn Baldwin had six kills, hitting .444.

The next two sets were all Chargers. Trevecca scored the first point of the second set, but UAH regained the lead 2-1 and never trailed again, winning 25-13. The third set opened with a 4-0 Charger run and UAH went on to lead the entire set.

The fourth set saw the Trojans regroup with a 4-1 start. A 5-1 run put the Chargers back in front. The hosts could not expand the lead beyond four, but did lead 10-6. Trevecca chipped away and eventually regained the lead, 15-14, with a 9-4 run. With the match tied 16-16, Trevecca scored two straight for an 18-16 lead, one they would not give up, extending the match to a fifth set.

After the opening point went to UAH, Trevecca scored three straight for a 3-1 lead on the serve of Elizabeth Cook. The match remained close and with UAH leading 9-8, Trevecca turned the set and the match with a 7-1 run. Claire Hindman fueled the run on serve five straight points on serve.

TOP PLAYERS

Austyn Baldwin led the team with 17.5 points with 13 kills, an assist, two digs, and was in on six blocks. Ellie Buffler led the team with 15 kills and 13 digs for a double-double. Lydia Yonce added nine kills, two assists, 18 digs, and two blocks.

THE TEAM

Trevecca hit .193 while holding UAH to .176.
