Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Sweep Cedarville; Win Great Midwest Regular Season Title

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – #RV Trevecca Nazarene University baseball (28-10, 23-5 Great Midwest) swept two games at Cedarville University (17-21, 14-16 Great Midwest), 5-3 and 9-4, at Yellow Jacket Field on Saturday.

The two wins give the Trojans a four-game sweep of the Yellow Jackets, but more, the outright regular-season Great Midwest title and the top seed in next week's conference championship tournament.

Shawn Wallwork hit .500 for the weekend going 9-18 with six runs, two doubles, a home run, 11 RBI, three walks, and two stolen bases.

Tiger Cox picked up two wins with two appearances. Cox threw 5.2 innings of one-hit shutout ball with two strikeouts. The senior did not allow any other baserunners.  

Two of the conference's top fielding teams put the glove on display with only one error between them over the four-game series.

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships are May 12-15 in Mason, Ohio at Prasco Park.

SERIES HISTORY

Trevecca is 35-4 in the all-time series with Cedarville. With the two wins Saturday, the Trojans have won the last 23 consecutive games in the series. The last win for the Yellow Jackets came at Prasco Park at the NCCAA National Championship in 2013-2014.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GM 1

Cedarville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a solo home run from Austin Brown. The Yellow Jacket lead stood until the top of the fourth when the Trojans took the lead with two runs. John O'Dwyer drove in Shawn Wallwork with a fielder's choice before Trey Vanderpool singled to drive in Ethan Harrison. The Trojans went on to score five unanswered with two in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Yellow Jackets made it interesting with a two-run sixth. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Cedarville's Westin Blattner walked, and with two out Blattner moved to second on a wild pitch. Brown drove a Jay Benard pitch to left-center where John O'Dwyer made a diving catch to end the Yellow Jacket threat.

GM 2

After an inning, the score was 1-1. Ethan Harrison tripled with two away and scored on a John O'Dwyer single. In the third, the Yellow Jackets took the lead 2-1. The Trojans pulled ahead with a two-run fifth. Zeke Lecomte and Tarver Hayslip walked to lead off the inning. With one away, Andru Becker doubled to score Lecomte. Hayslip scored on a Braden Odom fielder's choice. Cedarville cut the Trojan lead to one, 3-2, with a run in the sixth. In the seventh, Trevecca put five runs on the board and led 8-3. Trevecca scored five runs on six hits. Cedarville added two runs in the eighth to make it 8-5 before the Trojans added an insurance run in the ninth.  

STATS REPORT

GM 1

David Jackson (4-1) picked up the win and Jay Benard the save (6). Jackson pitched five innings allowing three runs and striking out two. Benard pitched the final two innings and did so in no-hit shutout fashion.

Braden Odom and Ethan Harrison each hit a double. Shawn Wallwork went 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI.

GM 2

After producing nine hits in the first game, Trevecca added 13 in the second game.

Ethan Harrison went 3-4 with two runs scored and a triple. Shawn Wallwork, Justin Chauvin, and Andru Becker all doubled. Odom drove in two runs as did Wallwork and John O'Dwyer. O'Dwyer went 3-5. Wallwork, Harrison, and Hayslip each scored twice.

Alex Clouthier followed up his pitcher of the week performance last week with another strong outing, allowing two runs on three hits over five innings. Chase Douglas (1-0) an inning of relief to earn the win.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Trojans head to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference championships as the top seed. The Championships are May 12-15 and return to Mason, Ohio at Prasco Park.
