Trevecca Softball | Trojans Advance with 11-3 Win over Findlay; Face ODU Early Friday

FINDLAY, Ohio – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference is hosting its 2021 softball championships at the Marathon Diamonds, Trevecca Nazarene University (23-11) lost the opener but defeated fifth-seeded University of Findlay (23-18), 11-3, at Anderson Field to advance to Friday's play.

WHAT'S NEXT

Another Brunch is on the slate for the Trojans on Friday, as they face elimination again in game nine (9) of the tournament at 9 AM. The Trojans face seventh-seeded Ursuline College (11-23) in tournament game number nine. The Arrows defeated the second-seeded Hillsdale College (30-16) in the quarterfinals before losing to sixth-seeded Ohio Dominican University (26-16) 13-1 on Thursday.

Trevecca is 19-2 versus the Arrows all time. Trevecca is on a three-game win streak in the series and have won eight of the last ten. 

The winner of game nine advances to game twelve at 11:30 AM.

GAME ONE

In the day's first game, eighth-seeded Cedarville University (21-21) upset the Trojans 2-1 at Anderson Field. Fifth-seeded University of Findlay (23-18) lost 4-2 to fourth-seeded Tiffin University in the first round.

SERIES HISTORY

The Oilers led the series coming in, but the Trojans evened the all-time series 3-3 with the win. During the regular season, the Oilers ended the Trojan's 13-game winning streak 2-1 in Nashville on April 16. Trevecca came back to win game two 8-1. After losing three of the first four meetings in the series, Trevecca has won the last two meetings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trevecca scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Megan Groves drove a pitch out of the park for a two-run home run and Brooke Eakes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 3-0 Trojan lead. The Oilers hit their own two-run home run to make it a 3-2 game in the top of the second.

In the third, MaKray Odom broke the game open with a three-run double.

The Trojans sent nine to the plate in the fourth, pushing four runs across the plate with just one hit in the inning.

Trevecca benefitted from 15 free baserunners. Findlay hurlers walked 11 and hit four Trojans.

With the Trojans up 10-3 in the fifth, Malone Thrift singled to drive in Abbie Page to force the run-rule into play giving the Trojans an 11-3 win.

CIRCLE AND BOX NOTES

MaKray Odom went 2-4 with four RBI, a run, and a double. Megan Groves went 1-2 with two runs scored, two RBI, three walks, and a two-run home run. Malone Thrift went 2-3 with two runs scored, a walk, and a double.

Alex Behnke (10-2) started and got the win, her 10th of the season with four innings of work. She allowed four hits and three runs – two earned. She did not walk a batter. Hannah Caffey came in for one inning of one-hit work to shore up the win.
