Trevecca Baseball | Make Great Midwest Championship Game vs Tiffin; Saturday at 11 AM

MASON, Ohio – #24 (Collegiate Baseball) Trevecca Nazarene University Trojan baseball (32-10) defeated #6 Hillsdale College (21-22), 9-1, in the third round of the 2021 Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament at Prasco Park. The Trojans are in the title game for the fourth time and have won the first three. In fact, the Trojans won the first three Great Midwest baseball championships.

The winner bracket final featured the only two undefeated teams through the first two days of baseball at Prasco Park and Legacy Field.

WHAT IS NEXT

Following the loss, Hillsdale hung around Prasco Park to play the loser bracket final against #5 Tiffin University. The Dragons eliminated #4 Kentucky Wesleyan, 6-3, in game #12 at Legacy Field and then moved to Prasco and knocked Hillsdale out of the tournament 7-4.  

Trevecca faces fifth-seed Tiffin University (29-15) who Trevecca defeated 3-1 during the regular season series at Trevecca April 16-17. The Trojans own a 3-2 all-time series edge with the Dragons.

TU finished the regular season 6-4 over their last 10 including a 3-1 series win over Kentucky Wesleyan.

After losing to Kentucky Wesleyan in the tournament opener Wednesday, the Dragons have won four straight (Malone, Walsh, Kentucky Wesleyan, and Hillsdale) including two today.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trevecca opened the scoring with a five-run bottom of the second. John O'Dwyer led off the inning with a single to right and moved to third on a Joseph McNamee single to right. Zeke Lecomte drove in O'Dwyer with the game's first run with a single through the right side. Tarver Hayslip reached on an error, loading the bases with Trojans. David Milam reached on a fielder's choice that forced Hayslip out at second but scored McNamee. Andru Becker singled on a bunt down the third base line, scoring Lecomte. Braden Odom reached on a walk loading the bases again. Trey Vanderpool joined the hit parade with a single scoring Becker and Milam. Trevecca scored their five runs on five hits with an error and a walk.  

Trevecca added two runs in the fourth. Braden Odom singled with one away and with two out, Ethan Harrison drove him home with a two-run homer, the Trojans first of the postseason.

Treveccca added an insurance run in the fifth. David Milam reached on a bunt single, driving in Joseph McNamee who reached on a single to leadoff the inning.

Tiffin broke through with a run in the eighth, but TNU matched that with a run in their half of the inning.

Trevecca has won seven in a row and 16 of their last 19 games.

ON THE MOUND/IN THE BOX

Drew Pierce (4-0) pitched seven strong innings to get the win. Pierce struck out three Chargers and allowed three hits and a walk. Of his 110 pitches, 76 were strikes. Tiger Cox and Andrew Blount each pitched an inning to close out the win.

All nine Trojan batters reached in the game with eight doing so with a hit and eight different Trojans scored. Joseph McNamee and Zeke Lecomte collected three hits. McNamee scored twice. Lecomte, David Milam, Ethan Harrison, and Trey Vanderpool all drove in two runs. The only extra-base hit came from the homerun by Ethan Harrison.

SERIES HISTORY

The Chargers are the only current Great Midwest program with a winning all-time record against Trevecca. Hillsdale leads the all-time series 7-5. The Chargers won the last three meetings prior to the Trojans win today, but the teams have not played since April of 2019.
