Trevecca Baseball | No. 24 Trojans Advance Past KWC at G-MAC; Face Hillsdale Friday at 11 AM

MASON, Ohio – #24 (Collegiate Baseball) Trevecca Nazarene University Trojan baseball (30-10) defeated #4 Kentucky Wesleyan College (23-15), 6-5, in the second round of the 2021 Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament.   

WHAT IS NEXT

Trevecca advances to Game Eleven (11) on Friday at 11:00 AM when they face sixth-seed Hillsdale College (21-21). The Chargers were 5-5 in their last 10 regular season games but defeated Findlay 3-1 in their final regular season series have rolled off two straight at the G-MAC Tourney.

The Chargers are the only current Great Midwest program with a winning record against Trevecca all-time. Hillsdale leads the all-time series 7-4. The Chargers have won the last three meetings, but the teams have not played since April of 2019. The Chargers have one seven of the last eight meetings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Alex Clouthier kept the Panthers off the board in the top of the first, the Trojans plated two in the bottom half. Shawn Wallwork singled with one out and moved to third with two out on a John O'Dwyer single. Wallwork scored on a Trey Vanderpool single. After McNamee reached to load the bases, Tarver Hayslip walked to force in O'Dwyer.

In the fourth, KWC rallied for two runs on a hit but benefitted from a runner reaching on a hit-by-pitch and a walk. The Trojans also gifted the Panters an error.

In the top of the fifth, the Trojans assisted the Panthers again with the first two batters reaching on a hit-by-pitch and an error. The third batter doubled to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead. The next two batters drove in a run each with a sac fly and a single.

The Trojans got two back in the bottom half for a 5-4 score.

Ethan Harrison reached on an error and John O'Dwyer joined him on base with a single. Trey Vanderpool reached on an error on a sac bunt attempt. O'Dwyer ended up at third on the error and Harrison scored. An out later, Tarver Hayslip picked up another RBI on a sac fly to leave the Trojans down 5-4.

With six outs left, the Trojans scored two in the eighth to regain the lead. David Milam reached on a leadoff single and moved to second on a sac bunt from Andru Becker. With two out Shawn Wallwork doubled to left driving in the tying run in the person of Milam. Ethan Harrison followed with a single, scoring Wallwork with what proved to be the winning run.

ON THE MOUND/IN THE BOX

Alex Clouthier started for the Trojans but did not figure in the decision. Clouthier pitched four and gave up three earned runs on four hits, two hit-by-pitch, and a walk. Tiger Cox pitched an inning of relief. Then, Tyler Koprowski (3-3) took over and kept the Panthers at bay over three innings of one-hit ball and sat down three on strikes to earn the win. Jay Benard added to his NCAA Era saves record with his 14th career save and seventh this season. Benard pitched a perfect ninth with one strikeout and two flyouts.

Shawn Wallwork, Ethan Harrison, John O'Dwyer, Trey Vanderpool, and Andru Becker each had two hits. Wallwork and Vanderpool had doubles.  

Trevecca scored their six runs on 11 hits but committed three erros and left 10 men on base. KWC contributed two errors to go along with two errors and left six men on base.

SERIES HISTORY

The series between the Trojans and Panthers continues to provide great baseball. The Trojans have the season edge 3-3 and lead the series 16-12. The   

Trevecca has won six in a row and 15 of their last 18 games.
