Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Win and Advance at Great Midwest Championships

Box Score

MASON, Ohio – #24 Trevecca Nazarene University Trojan baseball (29-10) won their 2021 Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament opener, 4-1, over eighth-seed Malone University (20-21).

Trevecca advances to Game eight (8) on Thursday at 1:30 PM.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Pioneer starter Eric Mullet (0-2) retired the Trojans in order in the bottom of the first, but the top-seeded Trojans scored first in their half of the second when leadoff batter John O'Dwyer reached on a Pioneer error. Trey Vanderpool and Joe McNamee delivered back-to-back hits, scoring O'Dwyer. The Trojans added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. A leadoff walk to Braden Odom came back to bite the Pioneers. Shawn Wallwork, the reigning Great Midwest and TSWA Player of the Week, doubled off the left-field wall, driving in Odom. Wallwork advanced to third on a fly-out by Ethan Harrison and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 Trojan advantage.

The score remained unchanged until the eighth when both teams plated a run. The Pioneers finally got to Trojan starter Chase Haley (6-1) with a leadoff single and a walk. Tiger Cox came in to relieve Haley, but a wild pitch moved the runners up, and then a ground out scored a run for the Pioneers. The Trojans got the run back in their half of the inning with the help of a one-out walk to John O'Dwyer and a Trey Vanderpool single. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Joe McNamee reached on an error, scoring O'Dwyer.

ON THE MOUND/IN THE BOX

Haley pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits, two walks, and sat down six Pioneers on strikes. Tiger Cox pitched two nearly perfect innings for his third save. Both Haley and Cox were on the all-conference team.

Shawn Wallwork went 2-4 with a double, run scored, and an RBI. Trey Vanderpool went 2-4 with a double and a stolen base.

Both teams had seven hits.

SERIES HISTORY

Trevecca defeated Malone for the fifth time this season. Trevecca beat Malone 4-0 in the regular season seri3es at Jackson Field. Trevecca is on an 11 game win streak in the series and leads the all-time series 13-3.

The last win for the Pioneers came four years ago to the day at Prasco Park. It was a tough 1-0 loss in the Great Midwest Tournament on May 12, 2017. An interesting note is the starter for the Pioneers that day also started today. Eric Mullet did not get the decision, but pitched 6.1 innings and allowed just four hits and no runs. Today, Mullet was sharp again, scattering seven hits with eight strikeouts over 7.1 innings pitched. He allowed just two earned runs.

WHAT IS NEXT

Trevecca faces fourth-seed Kentucky Wesleyan College (23-14) for the fifth time this season. The teams meet just two weeks ago in Nashville with the top two records in the conference at that time. The teams split the series 2-2. AS important as those games were, this one keeps the winner in the winner's bracket on Friday. The loser has to turn around and face elimination on Thursday at 5 PM.

The teams could not be more even. The teams have split the last 10 meetings with each team winning five and the all-time series is slightly in the Trojan's favor at 15-12.
