HOW IT HAPPENED
GM 1
After only mustering two hits in an 8-1 loss in Game 2 of Friday's doubleheader, Trevecca rebounded by pounding out 17 hits en route to scoring 16 runs - the second-most runs of the season behind a 17-run outburst in a 17-2 win at Malone on March 21. All nine Trojan hitters had at least one hit in the contest, including six with multiple hits.
The Trojans got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out single by Bryant Goolsby. The Dragons tied the game at 1 with a solo homer to lead off the top of the second, but Trevecca got that run back in the bottom half when Joseph McNamee singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on an infield single and scored on a two-out passed ball.
It stayed 2-1 until the bottom of the fourth when the Trojans erupted for eight runs on five hits to open up a 10-1 lead. The biggest blow in the inning again came with two outs, when Trey Vanderpool slugged a three-run homer to blow the game open and give Trevecca control. Tiffin tried to get back into the game in the fifth, getting a three-run homer of its own to close to within 10-5, but the Trojans matched the four-spot with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to hold a 14-5 lead. The key hit in the inning came from Shawn Wallwork, whose two-run single brought home Braden Odom and Ryan Mortensen.
Trevecca pushed its lead to 16-5 with a pair of runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Jordan Jackson and the Dragons did score three times in the top of the seventh, but Carson McClure came in out of the bullpen to get the final out and give the Trojans the 16-8 win in the opener.
GM 2
Tiffin drew first blood in the second game, plating a run in the top of the first inning. However, Trevecca got two in the bottom half, one on an RBI double by Ethan Harrison to score Odom and the other on a run-scoring single by Goolsby to bring home Harrison. In the second, McNamee singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, got to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Jackson to make it 3-1 Trevecca.
The Dragons scored two runs of their own in the top of the third to tie the game at 3, but Trevecca took control of things in the bottom half, getting eight runs on five hits to build an 11-3 advantage. Odom landed the biggest blow in the inning, smacking his fourth homer of the year - a three-run shot - to give the Trojans an eight-run cushion.
An RBI single by McNamee in the fourth scored Vanderpool to make it 12-3 before Tiffin and Trevecca traded runs in the sixth to keep the Trojans ahead, 13-4. The Dragons got one run in the seventh and two in the eighth to close to within 13-7, but Odom added a final RBI single to score Jackson in the bottom of the eighth to make it 14-7 and close out the scoring.
