Trevecca Softball | Trojans Run-rule Malone Twice on the Road to Start G-MAC Play

CANTON, Ohio - The Trevecca Nazarene University softball team (10-6, 2-0 Great Midwest) opened up conference play with a bang on Friday, defeating Malone twice by run-rule 11-1, and 9-1. 

The two wins mark nine straight victories for the Trojans, who have not lost since February 27.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1

  • Trevecca opened the scoring with an RBI single to left field by Brooke Eakes to score Lenna Robinson, followed by a Megan Groves single that scored Carly Sperlich for a 2-0 lead in the opening inning. After a Malone run to cut the lead in half, the Lady Trojans put up two runs in the second, and another in the third with a homer by Groves for a 5-1 lead.
  • Sperlich's two-run shot to left-center extended the lead even further in the fourth, and Malone thrift's solo homer made it 8-1 for Trevecca. The Trojans added another pair of runs in the fifth inning, capped by an RBI single by Sperlich to score Makray Odom for the 11-1 run-rule victory.

GAME 2

  • The Trojans picked up where they left off in the second game, leading 4-0 after two innings after Carly Sperlich's RBI double to score Malone Thrift. Three runs in the third inning and another in the fourth on an RBI single by Megan Groves gave the Trojans an 8-0 lead. Malone pulled a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Trojans would go on to grab another run-rule win with an 8-1 score.

CIRCLE AND BOX NOTES

GAME 1

  • Makray Odom went 3-4 with two RBIs, Carly Sperlich was 2-3 with four RBIs, and Matti Byrd went 2-3.
  • Ragyn Hall pitched all five innings for Trevecca, surrendering seven hits but only one earned run, striking out four batters.

GAME 2

  • Odom went 3-4 in Game 2 as well, with one RBI. Sperlich was 2-3 with an RBI, and Alyssa Triner had the same line with two RBIs.
  • Alex Behnke went the distance, pitching a three-hitter with no earned runs and two strikeouts.

WHAT'S NEXT

Trevecca will remain on the road on Saturday at Walsh for a doubleheader in Great Midwest play, before stepping out of conference play at Christian Brothers on March 31.
