Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans fall in three sets to No. 25 Cedarville

Nashville, TN -  The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (4-6, 4-6 Great Midwest) kept every set close, but was unable to get over the hump in a three set loss to No. 25 Cedarville (7-2, 7-2 Great Midwest) on Tuesday. 

The win ended a three-game win streak for Trevecca, and improved Cedarville's win streak to five straight.

THE SERIES

It was the 20th meeting between the two programs, and Trevecca has now lost eight in a row to the Yellow Jackets and trail the all-time series 4-16. 

THE MATCH

It was close in the early onset of the opening set, with both teams neck-and-neck tied up at 10. Cedarville started to pull away, and outscored Trevecca the rest of the way to take the first set 25-18.

The Yellow Jackets had a fast start to the second set, jumping out to a 16-6 lead. Trevecca worked its way back into it, and a service ace by Austyn Baldwin cut the Cedarville lead to 19-14. Cedarville maintained its lead, however, and took the second set 25-21.

The third and final set was the closest of the afternoon, and the Trojans had an early 7-5 lead after a kill by Ellie Buffler. When Cedarville had a 24-20 lead, kills by Emma Green and Buffler pulled Trevecca within two, but a kill by Lauren Willow cemented the 25-22 win for Cedarville in the third set, and gave the Yellow Jackets the clean sweep. 

TOP PLAYERS

Ellie Buffler was the lone offensive spark for Trevecca with 14 kills and a .244 hit percentage. Buffler also had six digs and 16 points. Baldwin was second in kills with five, and Chloee McDaniel and Claire Hindman tied for the team lead in digs with eight apiece.

Lauren Willow racked up 15 kills for Cedarville at a .619 rate, and registered 16 points. Her younger sister, Hannah Willow, added seven kills and 10 points. Riley Hensley chipped in eight kills for the Yellow Jackets and libero Mallory Delamarter led the team in digs with 12.

THE TEAM

Both teams had 103 attacks, but Cedarville had 39 kills to Trevecca's 33. The Trojans hit at a .117 percentage and committed 21 attack errors with three blocks. 

Cedarville hit at a .223 rate with seven blocks. Both teams were tied in digs with 42 each. 

WHAT'S NEXT 

Trevecca's regular season finale is Friday, at home against Kentucky Wesleyan. The Trojans will celebrate Senior Day, before jumping into Great Midwest Tournament play on Tuesday, March 9. The Trojans have already clinched qualification into the Great Midwest Tournament.
