NASHVILLE – Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball made it a doubleheader sweep for Trojan basketball on Homecoming with an 81-61 win over Fisk University at Trojan Fieldhouse.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES 

Trevecca is 7-0 versus Fisk since 2005. The game doesn't count as an official game. The last regular-season meeting came in 2011 when Trevecca won 107-82.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Four different Trojans scored in the first five minutes. Brendan Newton, CJ Penha, Josh Price, and Caleb Terry paced Trevecca to an 8-2 lead with 14:51 left in the half. The Trojans didn't stop there. After Fisk made it 8-5 Trojans, a Josh Price three fueled a 15-2 run and a 23-7 Trojan lead with 8:18 remaining. When Josh Price hit another three with 2:50 left in the half, Trevecca's lead increased to 25 (42-17). Trevecca's advantage at the half was 27 (46-19).

The Bulldogs changed the game plan at the half and used a 12-4 run to cut the Trojan lead to 15 (50-35) with 14:34 left in the game. Trevecca rolled of a 7-1 run for a 57-36 edge, a margin the Trojans essentially maintained to the final buzzer.

PLAYER STATS BREAKDOWN

CJ Penha led Trevecca with 26 points and turned in a double-double with 11 rebounds. Josh Price (14) and Brendan Newton (10) also reached double figures in scoring. Newton collected five rebounds and a block. Chris Rogers dished out seven assists.

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

The Bulldogs outscored Trevecca 42-35 in the second half.

Trevecca dominated the paint, outscoring the Bulldogs 28-20. Fisk had an edge in points off turnover (22-8) and 7-2 on fast-break scoring.

Trevecca shot 53.7% (29-54) from the field, 48.4% (15-31) from three-point range, and 73% (8-11) from the charity stripe. The rebounding edge went the way of the Trojans, 42-24. The Bulldogs won the turnover battle 10-18.

Trevecca held Fisk to 38% (24-63) shooting and the Bulldogs hit just 3-15 from deep.  

WHAT'S NEXT

Trevecca moves to regular season play following their three exhibition games. Trevecca is playing in the Miner Classic at Missouri S&T in Rolla, Mo. Trevecca faces the host Miner at 3 PM on Friday at Gibson Arena. Missouri S&T has won both of the previous meetings. On Saturday, Trevecca takes on Southwest Baptist University at 1 PM. Trevecca has only played Southwest Baptist once, a 64-44 loss in 2019.
