Trevecca Men's Basketball | Eagles Win Barn-Burner over Trojans

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University (3-2) lost an old-fashioned barn burner at Carson-Newman University (2-3), 70-67, in Holt Fieldhouse on Mossy Creek. Both teams produced significant leads and runs in both halves, but the Eagles surged last and hit a three with .3 seconds left to break a 67-67 tie. Seconds earlier, Trojan Chris Rogers hit a three, tying the game with 26 seconds outstanding.  

Carson-Newman had lost two in a row in the final seconds, including losing on a buzzer-beater three-pointer against No. 7 Queens last week. 

Josh Price matched his jersey number with 25 points, while CJ Penha scored another double-double with 13 and 15 rebounds. 

Brendan Newton (5), Caleb Terry (2), and Jaylon Tharpe (2) combined for nine blocks, one short of the team record during the NCAA Division II era.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES 

The Carson-Newman Eagles lead the all-time series 8-2. The last time the two schools played in men's basketball was 2013-14. The first meeting was during the 1979-80 season when both teams were in the NAIA and a part of District 24. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Trojans spurted out to a 10-2 lead. Josh Price scored five of the first 10. Calvin Walker hit a three-pointer with 10:09 left in the half, putting the Trojans up 15-11. The Eagles rocked the Trojans over the next nearly six minutes with a 24-6 run. At the end of the run, Carson-Newman led by 14 (35-21) with 4:15 to go in the half. Cue the Trojan counter punch – they did. Coach Mance called a timeout, and the Trojans responded with a 17-2 run to close the half, earning a one-point 38-37 lead at the break when Josh Price stroked his fourth first-half three-pointer with four seconds remaining.  

The Trojans extended their run-scoring the first five points of the second half, building a five-point (42-37) lead and capping a 22-2 run. The Trojans eventually built an eight-point (48-40) lead with 16:21 remaining. With 12:02 remaining Josh Price knocked down his fifth three-pointer, pushing the Trojans led to six (53-47), but a drought was on the Trojan doorstep. The Trojans didn't score again until Brendan Newton hit a layup with 6:25 to go, but the Eagles scored 10 straight for a 57-55 lead. The Trojans regained the lead twice, the last at 62-61 with 4:38 to go. 

The Eagles pulled ahead by four (66-62) with 2:58 to go. However, Trevecca responded again, tying the game at 67-67 on the Chris Rogers three with 26 seconds left, setting the stage for the near buzzer-beater Eagle three from Nick Brenegan, giving the Eagles the win 70-67. 

PLAYER STATS BREAKDOWN

Brendan Newton produced five blocks with six points, four rebounds, a steal, and three assists.

Chris Rogers scored 10 and nearly turned in a double-double with nine assists. Rogers also had six rebounds and two steals while hitting 2-3 from deep. 

Penha added two steals and two assists to his double-double. 

Price hit 5-10 from deep and added five rebounds. 

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

The Trojans outshot (43.3% - 41.0%, outrebounded (39-38) the Eagles. 

One of the keys for the Eagles came from deep, where they hit 13 three-pointers. Stroking 56.5% from beyond the arch.  

Trevecca outscored Carson-Newman 24-14 in the paint, but the Eagles topped the Trojans 20-8 in Fastbreak scoring. 

Both teams shot poorly at the line, but Carson-Newman hit 7-14 while the Trojans hit 5-11 from the charity stripe. 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Trojans get an eight-day break through the Thanksgiving holiday, returning to action with their first Great Midwest Conference game on Thursday, December 2, at Trojan Fieldhouse. The Oilers are third in the G-MAC preseason coaches' poll. The Trojans host the University of Findlay (2-2) at 7:30 PM. The Oilers own an 11-0 lead in the all-time series. In addition, Findlay is receiving votes in the D2CCA Preseason Poll. 

The Trojan conference homestand continues Saturday, December 4, with No. 16 Hillsdale College (3-1) visiting for a 4:00 PM tilt. The Chargers, the preseason favorite in the Great Midwest coaches poll, have won all nine previous meetings.
