Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Drop First Meeting with Ashland; Five Match Road Swing Next

NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (10-6, 3-4 Great Midwest) lost in three in what is the first-ever meeting with Great Midwest newcomer Ashland University (8-7, 7-0 Great Midwest) at Trojan Fieldhouse on Saturday.

The Eagles bested the Trojans 25-22, 28-26, 25-21.

The Eagles are one of two G-MAC teams undefeated through the first seven matches of the year. The former GLIAC member has won 21 of 23 sets played this year in the conference.

THE SERIES 

This is the first meeting all-time in volleyball for Trevecca and Ashland. 

MATCH DETAILS

All three sets were tight most of the way. The first had twelve ties and six lead changes. After a 4-1 start by Ashland, the Trojans tied the match at 4-4. Setting the pattern for the set and match. Trevecca took its first lead at 9-8. Trevecca's last lead was 16-15. With the match tied 17-17, the Eagles outscored the Trojans 8-5 to the finish.

The early part of set two went the way of the Trojans who scored the first three points, then with Ashland ahead 5-3, Trevecca scored six straight on the serve of Chloee McDaniel. The Trojans protected the 9-5 lead until AU tied the match at 13-13. The Eagles took a brief lead at 17-16, but Trevecca regained the lead and didn't trail again until Ashland pulled ahead 22-21. Ashland served set point at 24-22, but Trevecca responded and actually served at set point 25-24. The Eagles responded and eventually earned a 2-0 set advantage with a 28-26 win.

After the Eagles scored the first point of the third set, Trevecca scored the next three to gain the lead. Trevecca slowly built the lead and led by five (13-8). With the Trojans leading 15-10, Ashland made a move, knotting the match at 16-16 with a 6-1 run. The match still tilted the Trojans way until the Eagles edged ahead 19-18. The Eagles were able to maintain the lead after going up 20-19 and denied the Trojans a set in the sweep. 


TOP PLAYERS 

Two of Trevecca's outstanding players broke through milestones in the match.

Chloee McDaniel surpassed the 500 assist mark for the season.

McDaniel has 50 kills, 511 assists, 154 digs, 15 blocks, nine service aces.

Claire Hindman broke through the 200 digs mark.

Ellie Buffler led the way with 16 kills and hit .250.

McDaniel just missed a double-double with 38 assists and nine digs.

Austyn Baldwin had 10 kills and seven blocks.

Sami Raley added 11 kills and hit .386.

THE TEAMS 

The first two sets had 12 ties and six and seven lead changes respectively.

The third set had six ties and two lead changes.

The Eagles outhit the Trojans .198 to .185.

Ashland hit .195 in the first set and .250 in the final set.

After hitting .150 in the first, Trevecca hit .200 in the second and .206 in the third.

UP NEXT

The Trojans play away from Trojan Fieldhouse for the next five matches. Trevecca is 5-1 away from the Fieldhouse this season.

Trevecca plays at Ursuline College (3-12, 2-6 Great Midwest) Friday, October 8, and at Lake Erie College (2-13, 0-6 Great Midwest), October 9.

Then the Trojans play three matches at the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament at the Hammond (Ind.) Sportsplex October 15-16.

Trevecca next plays on the Hill October 22 (Malone) when they start a five-match home swing, concluding with senior day on Homecoming weekend.
