TREVECCA BASEBALL | SCHMALZ WINS 200TH IN SPLIT WITH SAGINAW VALLEY; SERIES CONTINUES FRIDAY

NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University Baseball Trojans (6-8) split a double-header with the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State University (4-7) to open a weekend four-game series. SVSU took game one 4-1 before TNU bounced back to take the nightcap 7-6. The game 2 victory was the 200 th in the Trevecca Career for head coach Ryan Schmalz.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES:

These were the first two games in the all-time series. The teams will play again on Friday at 2 p.m., and on Saturday at 1 p.m.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1
SVSU jumped out to an early lead on two solo home runs – one in the second inning, and one in the fourth … A 2-RBI single for the Cardinals stretched out the lead to 4-0 in the fifth … Trevecca got on the board in the eighth … Chandler Miller led off the inning with a single, and base hits from Justin Chauvin and John Anderson loaded the bases with nobody out … Dalton Mauldin picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice with one out
in the frame, but the Trojans were unable to produce any further, falling 4-1.
 
Game 2
SVSU again struck first, but this time, the Trojans answered quickly … Brian Lee drove in a run with a fielder's choice, and Dalton Mauldin followed with a 2-RBI base knock to give Trevecca the 3-1 lead … The Cardinals tied the game with two runs in the top of the third, but a solo homer from Bryant Goolsby (1) and a two-run double from Joseph McNamee gave TNU a 6-3 lead after three innings … SVSU tied the game with single
runs in the fifth, eighth, and ninth, but in the bottom of the ninth, Justin Chauvin reached on a throwing error and John O'Dwyer scored the winning run to give TNU the 7-6 victory.
        
PLAYER STAT REPORT
Trevecca had five singles in game one, one apiece from Miller, Chauvin, Anderson, Mauldin, and Javier LopezJake Roberson (2-2) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on nine hits in five innings. He walked two and fanned seven. Goolsby was 2-for-3 in game two with a pair of walks and his homer … Mauldin and McNamee drove in a pair of runs each, and O'Dwyer and Braden Odom each scored twice … O'Dwyer stole three bases in the game, and Odom pilfered a pair … Lee Cunningham (1-0) earned the win out of the bullpen, allowing two earned runs on two hits, three walks and one strikeout.
  
TEAM REPORT
In game one, SVSU plated four runs on 10 hits, and TNU scored one runs on five hits … the Trojans made the only error in the first game

In the second contest, The Trojans scored seven runs on eight hits and made three errors, while SVSU pushed across six tallies on seven hits, but the Cardinals made six defensive miscues
 
WHAT'S NEXT
The teams will continue their four-game weekend set on Friday for a single game (2 p.m.) before concluding the series on Saturday for one final tilt. (1 p.m.)
