Trevecca Men's Basketball | Concordia-Irvine Outlasts Trojans Second Half Push

IRVINE, Calif. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (0-6) lost 82-76, to Concordia University-Irvine (6-3) in CU Arena on Monday to close its four-game road trip.

 

SERIES/HISTORY: 

Tonight's game was the first ever played between the two schools.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

After scoring the game's first basket the Trojans faced an uphill battle the rest of the night. The Eagles offense responded with an 8-0 run and with 6:28 remaining in the half, CUI opened up a game-high 15 point lead, 34-19. An Austin Wills (JR/Benton, IL) layup with 1:50 to play brought the Trojans to a 38-29 halftime deficit. Through the first 10 minutes of the second half the Eagles extended their lead back to as many as 15, but a 10-0 run led by Evan Ragsdale (JR/Nashville, TN) brought the Trojans within five at 50-45. The game was tied at 68-68 with 2:42 to play, but the Eagles put the Trojans away by scoring the game's next seven points hanging on to win 82-76.

 

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

The Trojans shot 50% (30-60) from the field, 90% (9-10) from the foul line and were 29.2% (7-24) shooters from 3-point range.

TNU won the rebound battle 39-29, while the CUI bench outscored TNU's 32-19. Trevecca's 16 assists were more than CUI's 13, but the Eagles created more steals 10-5.

 

PLAYER STATS REPORT

Trojan starters Evan Ragsdale and Reed Smith (SR/Brentwood, TN) both scored 16 points in different fashions. Ragsdale fired 2-of-4 from 3-point range and made all six of his free-throws while big man Smith banged out most of his points in the post 7-of-10 from the floor. Austin Wills added 14 points while playing a team-high 35 minutes. Imani Starling (JR/Nashville, TN) helped with three points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Trojans take a week off from the hardwood for the Thanksgiving holiday before suiting up once again in Trojan Fieldhouse.

 

Trevecca hosts the University of Alabama-Huntsville on December 2 at 7:15 PM. The game will be the 21st in the all-time series in which the Chargers led the Trojans 11-9. UAH has secured a victory in each of the last contests, with the Trojans last positive result coming during the 2016 season.
