Trevecca Baseball | Season Ends at Great Midwest for 2018 Trojans

MASON, Ohio - The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (26-23) were eliminated from the 2018 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Championships, falling to the 2018 South Division Champion Kentucky Wesleyan College (29-20), 5-4 at Legacy Field (Prasco Park).

 

The loss ends the season for the Trojans and the collegiate career for Trevecca's five seniors: Ethan Hurt, Ryan Schultz, Carter Wiseman, Seth Morgan, and Tyler Burns.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES: This is the 19th meeting between the two schools in baseball and Trevecca leads the all-time series 11-8. The win by the Panthers breaks a two-game win streak for the Trojans in the series.

  

GAME CHRONICLE 

KWC scored in the top of the first when Cody Bridges scored on a Joseph Burke groundout … the Panthers added another run in the second when Ethan Maxey scored on a Cody Bridges fielder's choice … Trevecca evened the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in their half of the second, Ethan Hurt scored on a Michael Brown ground out, then Chandler Miller scored on a Carter Wiseman single … Lane Kennemore scored on a wild pitch in the third for a 3-2 Panther lead … TNU evened the game at 3-3 when Ethan Harrison scored following a Sam Mang round out … a KWC run in the sixth (Ben Wilcoxson singled to score Levi Tanner) and another in the eighth (Cody Bridges scored on an Andrew Kirkland double) put the Panthers up two going into the ninth … Trevecca threatened in the ninth after Brandon Hauswald doubled to score Carter Wiseman who reached on a triple, pulling the Trojans to within a run … Tyler Burns reached on a walk, but Sam Mang's drive to the outfield was run down by the centerfielder to end the threat, game, and season for the Trojans

Ethan Hurt Produced the third best batting average (.305), stolen bases (13), doubles (8), and home runs (5) this season. Had second-most hits (53) and runs scored (30) this season and his three triples tied for the second most. Tied for fourth most RBI (25). Owns the Great Midwest record for stolen bases in a season (32).

 

Carter Wiseman turned in the fourth best batting average (.298) on the season. Third most runs scored (29) and on-base-percentage (.416)     fourth most RBI (25)      led the team with four triples and hit-by-pitch (11)

 

Ryan Shultz is 5-4 on the year with on complete game and a Great Midwest Pitcher of the Week honor. His five wins are second best on the team. Shultz produced 58 strikeouts over his 57.2 innings pitched. Opponents hit just .256 against him this year. Shultz made 13 starts with a  complete game.

 

Tyler Burns has the second-best batting average (.333). The senior led the team in walks (27) and on-base percentage (.452). Burns added 28 runs scored and seven doubles. He produced the third most home runs (5), slugging percentage (.508), and RBI (29). On the mount, Burns owns four saves as well with ten strikeouts over his ten innings of work in ten appearances. Opponents hit just .200 against him.

 

Ethan Harrison leads the team in doubles (17), runs scored (50), stolen bases (18), slugging percentage (.649), batting average (.362), and hits (68). He is second in on-base percentage (.448), home runs (11), walks (25), and RBI (37).

 

Sam Mang paced the Trojans in home runs (13) and RBI (53). He added a .297 batting average with the second most doubles (10) and tied for the team lead with three triples. He had the second-best slugging percentage (.616). His 51 hits are third best on the team.  

 

Brandon Hauswald closed the season strong leading the team with six sacrifice hits. He added the second most stolen bases (15), and third most hit-by-pitch (5). He added the fourth best on-base-percentage (.387) fourth most walks.

 

Tyler Koprowski led the team with a 3.05 earned run average. The freshman finished 4-2 overall and a team-high five saves. Koprowski pitched 41.1 innings over 20 appearances. He collected 35 strikeouts with 18 walks while opponents hit .216 against him.  

 

Drew Pierce after a tough-luck 0-5 start, Pierce continued to grind and was rewarded with two Great Midwest Pitcher of the Week honors over the last three weeks of the regular season. He picked up two wins in the stretch. He added the Tennessee Sports Writers Association pitcher of the week honor during that span as well. He stepped it up another notch with a stellar 8-inning effort in his lone start at the G-MAC Championships, a game the Trojans won over No. 16 Ohio Dominican. Pierce started 14 games with a 2-5 record. His season earned run average (3.89) was second best on the team, and he added 96 strikeouts over 85.2 innings. He has walked just 28 and opponents hit just .228 against him.

 

Jake Roberson led the team with seven wins and a 7-2 record. Roberson created 65 strikeouts over 70.1 innings pitched. His innings pitched are second-most on the team, and the third-best earned run average. He made 12 starts and made the second most appearances (18).
