Trevecca Softball | Trojans Sweep Kentucky Wesleyan in Great Midwest; Home Again this Weekend

NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University softball team (16-6-1, 3-1 Great Midwest) took a pair of games from conference rival Kentucky Wesleyan College (13-14, 2-4 Great Midwest). The first, 8-6, in dramatic come-from-behind fashion and the second, 10-2, with a run-rule walk off hit.

 

The Trojans suffered one loss in their last nine outings and are 15-3-1 over their last 19 games. Megan Groves hit her first career home run and now has the second most doubles on the team with six.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES:  Trevecca and Kentucky Wesleyan have met 29 times now in the NCAA D2 era. The Trojans lead the series 17-12. The Trojans sweep turns the tide in the series. Reversing KWC's 4-2 advantage in the last six meetings.

 

GAME CHRONICLE 

GAME ONE

Trevecca entered the bottom of the fifth trailing 5-0 to the Panthers. But the Trojans tied it with a five-run fifth. Ali Birchfield singled to lead off the inning, MaKray Odom singled, Danielle Horton reached on an error with Birchfield scoring. An out later Bailey Alexander walked before Megan Groves doubled to drive in two runs. With two away Caitlyn Hudgins singled to score a run. The Ali Birchfield, batting for the second time, singled to drive in the fifth run of the inning. Each team scored a run in the seventh inning, sending the game to extra innings tied 6-6. Caitlyn Hudgins delivered a solo home run for the Trojans marker in the seventh. In the eighth Bailey Alexander reached on an error with one away before Megan Groves hit a two-run game winning walk off home run.

GAME TWO

The visiting Panthers scored two runs, their only for the game, in the top of the first. With one away a walk and a single setup an RBI-double off the bat of Lexie Mullin. From there the Trojans scored 10 unanswered. MaKray Odom reached on a walk in the bottom of the first and later scored on a wild pitch. Caitlyn Hudgins led off the Trojan second inning with a double. Maddux Reid pinch ran and later scored on an fielding error, evening the game at 2-2. A three-run fourth inning put the Trojans up for good. Caitlyn Hudgins led off reaching on a hit-by-pitch and later scored. The Trojans scored those three runs on just one hit with the help of two Panther errors. In the three-run fifth Megan Groves led off with a double and an out later Caitlyn Hudgins hit a two-run home run. In the sixth, the Trojans scored two runs to force the run-rule into effect. Caitlyn Hudgins delivered the knock-out punch with an RBI single that scored Megan Groves.

 

GAME ONE

Savannah Carr (6-1) pitched the final two innings for the win. Carr allowed just one hit and a walk. Five different Trojans connected for more than a single hit as the team collected 12 total base hits. Megan Groves drove in four runs and scored one with her two hits, a double, and a home run. Caitlyn Hudgins was 2-4 with a run scored, two RBI, and a home run. Ali Birchfield was 3-3 with a double and Danielle Horton also had three hits.

 

Trojan pitchers had just two strikeouts and scattered eight hits and six free passes to hold off the Panthers long enough for the win. Trevecca took advantage of four Panther errors.

 

GAME TWO

Raygn Hall (5-2) pitched a complete game for the win over six innings of work. Hall allowed just four hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Caitlyn Hudgins went 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored, reached on a hit-by-pitch, three RBI, a double, and a home run. Megan Groves added another two hits, two runs, an RBI, two doubles, and drew a walk.

 

Trevecca batters produced four doubles, a home run, 10 hits and reached base five more times with a hit-by-pitch and four walks. The Trojans also took advantage of three Panther errors.

 

WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE TROJANS

Trevecca hosts Lake Erie College for two games on Friday (2PM) and Ursuline College for another pair of Great Midwest conference games on Saturday (1PM). It is the first-ever meeting for Trevecca and Lake Erie in softball. TNU and Ursuline have met 17 times with the Trojans winning 16.
