LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (0-1) lost on the road at NCAA Division 1 Liberty University (2-0) 93-40 at the Vines Center.

SERIES/HISTORY: 

The first meeting in the series goes to the Flames. It is a return for new Trevecca coach Omar Mance to Lynchburg where he served as an assistant for Liberty coach Ritchie McKay for three seasons. Several of the Flames were recruited by Mance during his time in Lynchburg.   

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trevecca scored the first points of the game on a jumper from Austin Wills (SO/Benton, IL) … Liberty 21 of the next 24 points for a 21-5 lead with 9:26 remaining in the half … the host Flames led 44-19 at the break … the second half was similar with the host outscoring the visiting Trojans 49-21 in the final 20 minutes

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

The Flames used their height and experience to outscore the Trojans in points off of turnover (25-4), points in the paint (38-12), and fast break scoring (22-5) … the Flames are known for their defense, combined those skills with their height advantage to dampen the Trojans shooting numbers … Trevecca shot just 27.5% (14-51) from the field, 19.2% (5-26) from three-point range, and were on target from the foul line where they hit 77.8% (7-9)

Austin Wills led TNU with eight points while Deion Johnson (SR/Jacksonville, FL) added six points and a team-high eight rebounds and two assists … five Flames turned in a double-figure scoring night with Scottie James topping the list with 15 and nine rebounds … Caleb Homesley grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and six assists and added 10 points

 

WHAT'S NEXT

Trevecca returns to Nashville before taking the short drive to Jackson, TN and a meeting with former TranSouth and NAIA rival Union University (2-0). The Trojans visit the Bulldogs on Saturday (11.17) at 4 PM. The two schools have not met since 2012. This is the 78th meeting in the history of the two schools with Union leading the series 52-25. The Bulldogs have come away with the win in the last nine meetings.
