INDIANAPOLIS – On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Trevecca sophomore guard Devin Whitfield (Lipscomb, AL / McAdory HS) was recognized as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week on Monday.

This is Whitfield's second career conference weekly honor. TNU toppled Ohio Valley on the road in league play for a conference win in the past week.

Sixteenth-ranked Findlay remains at the top of the class in the league standings. The Oilers have won 13 straight and are a perfect 11-0 in conference play. Despite a single-digit defeat to Findlay, Hillsdale remains in second place followed by Walsh and Alderson Broaddus, both tied at 6-3.

Whitfield had a 38-point outburst, the third highest single-game scoring total around the league this season, and completed the double-double against the Fighting Scots with 10 boards.

He played all possible 40 minutes on the floor and sank 11 of his 20 shots while also making 15 attempts at the charity stripe. He added three assists, three blocks and recorded a pair of steals in the 97-83 win.

In short order, Whitfield has established his identity as one of the top scorers in the Great Midwest after being named to the all-conference freshman team in 2016-17 while averaging almost 16 points per game.

The 6-5 sophomore is averaging 22.5 points per game on over 55 percent shooting from the field. In four conference contests, he has upped those numbers to 25.3 ppg and a .614 field goal percentage while averaging over seven rebounds per game.

Whitfield has been TNU's top scorer in seven of his 10 games played in this season. It also represented back-to-back games with 30+ points after he blew up for a team-high 33 against Walsh on Jan. 6.

In his rapidly rising career, Whitfield has poured in 680 points in just 39 games, made 237 field goals and pulled in 229 rebounds while playing over 36 minutes per game.
