NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (2-8) split Saturday's doubleheader with Ashland University (1-1) at Jackson Field during day two of the 2017 Ed Stewart Classic.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES

The Trojans were facing the Eagles for the first time in program history

 

Prior to the second game Trevecca welcomed family, friends, and former players of the late Ed Stewart who this year's Trojan Classic is named in honor of. Also joining the team was former Trevecca coach and Trojan Hall of Famer Elliot Johnson. Johnson coached Ed Stewart. Johnson also coached current Trevecca head coach Ryan Schmalz when the both were at Olivet Nazarene University.

 

GAME CHRONICLE 

GM 1 vs Ashland (W 6-3)

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the second, but Trevecca plated two in the bottom of that frame for a 2-1 lead – Michael Brown reached on a single with no one out, an out later Cameron Boyett walked, and with two out Patrick Reed singled and Ethan Harrison doubled to score Brown and Boyett … in the bottom of the fourth Chandler Miller walked with one out, stole second and then scored on Griffin Ganick's single for a 3-1 TNU lead … Ashland tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run fifth … Trevecca pushed the win to their column with a three-run bottom of the fifth – Bryson Shelton started the action with a lead-off double, Tyler Burns walked with one out, Cameron Boyett doubled to score both runners, Clay Staton, running for Boyett, moved to third on a throwing error, Chandler Miller walked and then participated in a double steal that scored Staton

GM 2 vs Ashland (L 5-2)

Trevecca owned a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the third … the Eagles plated four in the fourth for a 4-1 lead and add a fifth in the fifth for a 5-1 lead … Trevecca added a run in their half of the fifth for what would be the final, 5-2

 

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

GM 1 vs Ashland (W 6-3)

Each team had eight hits … Eagles had five errors while Trojans had two … Trojan pitchers combined to strikeout 10 Eagle batters

GM 2 vs Ashland (L 5-2)

Trevecca outhit the Eagles who also turned in two errors, but Trojan pitchers walked five and added a hit-by-pitch to assist the AU batters

GM 1 vs Ashland (W 6-3)

Michael Brown collected two hits in four at bats and scored a run … Cameron Boyett drove in two, scored one, doubled, and walked … Ethan Harrison went 1-3 with a double, two RBI, and a walk … Jesse Peters (2-0) started and picked up the win with five innings of work – allowed seven hits, no walks, and had seven strikeouts of Eagle batters … Christian Lohr got the save with two innings of work and allowed one hit and one walk with three strikeouts

GM 2 vs Ashland (L 5-2)

Ethan Harrison went 3-4 with a stolen base … Sam Mang hit a solo home run … John Bolton (0-1) and took the loss, allowing just one hit, but walked one and allowed another runner on base with a hit-by-pitch … Bolton didn't allow a hit over the first three innings  

 

WHATS NEXT 

The Trojans host the University of Southern Indiana (2-3) next weekend at Jackson Field for a three-game series starting Friday at 6 PM vs. the Screaming Eagles. USI owns a 2-0 advantage in the series during the NCAA Division II era.
