Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans End Drought vs. Christian Brothers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (3-2) defeated Christian Brothers University (4-1) in four sets, 25-18, 25-16, 14-25, 25-22 at the Trojan Fieldhouse.

The records show that the Bucs had defeated the Trojans in 50 of the last 52 meetings. Trevecca and Christian Brothers were longtime conference foes in their NAIA days, but have not played regularly for a number of years. Still, it was a significant win for the program over a Buc program that has long been a standout in the sport. 
 
Trevecca hosts the Scott Jones Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Trojan Fieldhouse. Trevecca will play first at 6 PM on Friday and then again at 8 PM. Saturday the Trojans will play at Noon. 
 
Trevecca had a balanced attack against the Bucs and despite falling behind 4-1 in the first set, turned on the power and hit .303 for the set and outscored the Bucs 24-14 after the slow start. The Bucs last lead was 12-11 set was tied 12-12 when the Trojans finished with a 12-6 advantage for the win. After a sideout to tie the match at 12-12, Clare Taylor served the Trojans to five more points and a 17-12 led. 
 
In the second set Trevecca led 6-4 when Stephanie Bouchard delivered a kill that turned the serve over to Miranda Bingham. The freshman served the Trojans to six more points and a 12-4 lead. Bingham returned to serve with the team up 21-16 and served the Trojans to the win with four straight points. In all 10 of Trevecca's points in the set came from Bingham serves. 
 
The Trojans fell behind 6-2 in the third set and only had consecutive serves three times in the set. Trevecca's attack percentage bottomed out at .097 in the third set.
 
Trevecca consistently built a lead in the fourth set. The Trojans led 17-9 before fighting off the Bucs down the stretch. The Bucs closed the gap to two on multiple occasions late in the set. In fact on Trevecca's first match-point serve the Bucs got a side out on a service error only to see the Trojans win it on a sideout on the very next serve. 
 
Trevecca's balanced attack included five players with at least eight kills, but no player had more than 10. Four Trojans contributed at least nine digs. Janessa Hodge came away with six blocks, two were solo. Katelyn Atkinson had eight kills, three assists, nine digs, and five blocks. Ashleigh Lozier led the way with 14 digs and Hannah Matthews had 39 assists.
