Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Take Two on Opening Day at North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. - The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (2-0) opened the 2016 season with a pair of victories on Friday at the University of North Alabama Classic (UNA Classic Home). The Trojans defeated Tiffin University (14-25, 26-24, 25-21, 17-25, 15-8) in comeback fashion before taking out the Fisk University Bulldogs in straight sets (25-17, 25-14, 25-18) at UNA's Flowers Hall.  

Trevecca is now 2-0 with a pair of games slated for Saturday. Trevecca faces Northwood University (Live Stats) at 3:30 PM and will take on the host North Alabama Lions in the tournament finale at 7:30 PM (Watch Live Video/Statistics). The meeting with Northwood will be the first in program history for the Trojans. Trevecca is 0-4 all-time versus North Alabama.

Trevecca 3, Tiffin 2 

Tiffin came out with a dominating performance in the first set, using a 11-4 run to take out the Trojans 25-14. Trevecca slowly changed the momentum, first with a 26-24 win in set #2. 
 
Trevecca head coach Jayme Crowley said of the first-ever meeting with Tiffin, "We finished strong with a good team effort and chemistry against Tiffin. It is good to struggle yet win and I think the G-MAC fitness challenges helped us with our mindsets, especially in the fifth and deciding set." 
 
Tiffin pounded Trevecca in the opening set, using an 11-4 run to deliver a 25-14 set one win. The Trojans responded in set two, narrowly claiming a 26-24 set two win. Trevecca maintained their momentum in set three and pulled ahead two sets to one with a 25-21 victory. Trevecca broke a 21-21 tie by scoring the final four points of the set. 
 
The Dragons, in a must-win set, responded with another dominating set with a 25-17 victory in the fourth set, evening the match and setting up a match-deciding fifth set. 
 
Trevecca jumped out early with a 10-4 advantage setting the tone for a 15-8 fifth-set win.
 
Trevecca hit at a .227 (16 kills, 6 errors, 44 chances) percentage in set two and dominated the fifth set with a .421 (9/1/9) attack percentage. 
 
Three Trojans collected double digit kills. Katelyn Atkinson (23), Clare Taylor (12), and Alex Reuter (10) led the way for the Trojans. Hanna Matthews assisted on 42 kills in her collegiate debut. Taylor and Miranda Bingham each had three service aces. Ashleigh Lozier had a team-high 21 digs while Atkinson (16) and Miranda Bingham (13) hit double figures in digs. Janessa Hodge had four blocks and Reuter had three. 
 
Trevecca 3, Fisk 0
Trevecca opened the first set hitting .143 with 12 kills and seven errors in 35 chances. The Trojans rolled to a .286 hitting percentage in the final two sets. In set two the team had 13 kills and three errors in 35 chances. Set three was quick with just 28 chances and 10 kills against two errors. 
 
Crowley said, "Katelyn, Alex, and Clare were our big point scorers on the day while Hanna did a n ice job of running the offense and making good decisions with poise. Miranda did all the little things that do not show up in the stats well. Those are the key things that turn into wins for the team. She picked up coverage balls, played solid defense, and served well."
 
Trevecca is 22-12 all-time versus Fisk, the last meeting came in 2011. 
 
Clare Taylor led the way with 13 kills and three errors in 28 chances for a .357 hitting percentage. Eight different Trojans collected at least one kill. Danielle Moll had 21 assists while Hanna Matthews had nine assists. Ashleigh Lozier and Katelyn Atkinson each had three service aces. Katelyn Atkinson led with eight digs.
