Trevecca Volleyball | Drop Two Battles @ Bellarmine Triangle

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (5-6) played two matches at the Bellarmine University Triangle. The Trojans fell to William Jewel College (6-5) in five sets in the opener 20-25, 25-8, 21-25, 25-15, 10-15 and then lost in four sets to the host Bellarmine Knights (9-2) 17-25, 25-20, 19-25, 13-25.

After knocking off previously unbeaten Bellarmine in the first match of the tri-match, the Cardinal defeated the Trojans in a five-set dual.

 

The Cardinal held a 24-16 edge in the first set before the Trojans rallied for four straight before falling 25-20.

 

Trevecca produced a 14-3 kills edge in set two for the win, dominating with a .286 attack percentage in the set and a 25-8 win.

 

In set three the Cardinals battled for a back and forth victory, 25-21.

 

 The Trojans jumped out to a 16-9 advantage and pushed through for the win, setting up a match deciding fifth set. Trevecca produced a .258 attack percentage in the fourth set.

 

The Cardinal dominated the fifth with a 15-10 victory.

 

Clare Taylor with 11, Katelyn Atkinson with 13, and Alex Reuter with 12 all reached double figures in kills. Taylor (13) and Atkinson (10) each had a double-double with double figure digs. Hanna Matthews had a game high 43 assists and Ashleigh Lozier added 12 digs.

 

William Jewell College leads NCAA Division II era meetings 2-1.

After dropping the first set, the Trojans took an early 6-2 lead in the second set and never trailed. The Trojans led by as many as six twice (16-10, 21-15) late in the set before taking a five-point win 25-20.

 

The Trojans hit .119 as a team in the second set and .109 in the third. No Trojan reached double digits in kills. Clare Taylor collected nine kills and 16 digs. Claire Reinthaler had five blocks.

 

The Trojans trailed for most of the first set though they were able to tie the Knights on two occasions, the last coming at 12-12. Trevecca cut a Bellamine six point lead (18-12) in half at 19-16, but the Knights closed the set with a 6-1 run for the win.

 

The swing set came in the third. The set was close early with Trevecca catching the Knights and eventually taking a lead at 15-14. A 6-1 run by the Knights turned the table on the set and the match.

 

Trevecca is currently 0-2 against the Bellarmine Knights in the NCAA Division II era.

 

Trevecca returns to action on the Tuesday the 20th at 6 PM when Maryville University – St. Louis (2-8) visits the Trojan Fieldhouse. This is the first meeting between the two teams.
