Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Top Cedarville in G-MAC Championship Play

MASON, Ohio – Top-seeded Trevecca Nazarene University Baseball (32-19) team won again on Thursday morning at the 2016 Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Baseball Championships at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio. Trevecca defeated fourth-seeded Cedarville University (18-27), 10-5. 

 

Trevecca advances to Friday play at Prasco Park with an 11 AM game against third-seeded Alderson Broaddus University (29-19) in the winner's bracket final. TNU is 10-3 all-time versus the Battlers.

Trevecca is 21-4 versus Cedarville all-time. 

 

After the first inning, Trevecca's lead-off hitter reached base in each of the last eight innings.

 

Trevecca, playing as the visiting team, opened the scoring with a three-run second inning. Zach Tompkins (SR/Mt. Juliet, TN), Clay Staton (JR/Franklin, TN), and Griffin Ganick (SO/Brentwood, TN) opened the frame reaching with a walk. Sam Mang (FR/Woodstock, GA) singled next scoring Tompkins and Staton. Ryan Arington (JR/Cincinnati, OH) delievered a double scoring Ganick.

 

Cedarville responded with two in the second and tied the game with a run in the third.

 

The Trojans regained the lead with a single run in the fourth. Ryan Arington hit a lead-off single and stole second before moving to third on a Micah Blount (SR/Birmingham, AL) fly ball to the outfield. Bryson Shelton (JR/Powell, TN) drove Arington in with a single to left. 

 

Trevecca gained separation with a five-run sixth. Ethan Harrison (FR/Erlanger, KY) was hit-by-pitch to lead off the inning. Tyler Tichenor (SR/Centertown, KY) singled next. An out later Bryson Shelton doubled, driving in Harrison and Tichenor scored on a throwing error. Shelton stole third. Clay Staton and Griffin Ganick followed with four pitch walks. Shelton scored on Zach Tompkins triple. Sam Mang reached on a fielder's choice, which forced Ganick out at second and scored Tompkins. With Staton at third, Mang drew a throwing error while stealing second, which allowed Staton to score from third. 

 

The Yellow Jackets grabbed two back in the sixth. 

 

Trevecca added a run in the eighth inning. Zach Tompkins scored a Clay Staton double after walking to lead off the inning.

 

Every Trojan reached base with eight different players reaching by hit. Trevecca tagged the six Yellow Jacket pitchers for 11 hits and drew 12 walks and one batter reached on a hit-by-pitch.

 

Byron Shelton, Clay Staton, and Ryan Arington all produced two hits. Sam Mang was 1-5 with a stolen base and three RBI. Arington added a run scored, a double, a stolen base, and an RBI. Shelton scored a run, walked, doubled, stole a base, and had two RBI. Staton scored twice, walked twice, drove in a run, and doubled. Zach Tompkins tripled, stole a base, walked twice, scored three runs, and drove in one. Ethan Harrison was 1-4 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a stolen base.

 

Bryan Smith (JR/Unionville, TN) pitched six innings to move to 8-3 on the year. Smith allowed 11 hits and five runs – four earned, did not walk a batter, and had three strikeouts.

 

Austin Sisk (SR/Kodak, TN) picked up his fourth save of the year with three innings of work. Sisk allowed one hit and a walk while striking out one.

 

In G-MAC tournament games the Purple and White are 12-1 all-time. The Trojans lost their very first G-MAC game and have won 12 straight since.

 

Trevecca is 76-15 versus the Great Midwest Athletic Conference members all-time. The Trojans, the four-time regular season G-MAC champions, are 69-17 in regular season G-MAC contests.
