Trevecca Baseball | Road Win at Lincoln Memorial Starts Road Trip

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (21-14, 11-1 G-MAC) picked up a non-conference road win at Lincoln Memorial University (24-16) on Wednesday, 5-4 in 10 innings at Lamar Hennon Field.

 

The game marked the return of Trevecca head coach Ryan Schmalz to LMU. The fourth-year Trojan mentor was an assistant to Railsplitter head coach Jeff Sziksai for seven seasons prior to taking the Trojan top job.

 

The game serves as the first of a seven-game road swing for the Trojans, the second longest of the season.

  

Trevecca heads to Vienna, W.Va. where they will play a four-game series with Ohio Valley University beginning with two games starting at 11 AM on Friday. The series concludes with two games on Saturday also beginning at 11 AM. The Trojans are 9-1 all-time versus OVU. The Purple and White have a six-game winning streak in the series with the Fighting Scots. The last meeting was a TNU win in the 2015 G-MAC Championship game.

 

The Trojans are 13-2 over their last 15 games.  The all-time series between TNU and LMU is tied at 2-2. It is the first meeting for the two schools since 2001. 

 

Micah Blount (SR/Birmingham, AL) hit is 11th home run of the season for Trevecca. Tyler Tichenor (SR/Centertown, KY) added to his career stolen base record with his 100th career stolen base. It is his 20th of this season.

 

Tyler Tichenor and Clay Staton (JR/Franklin, TN) each were 2-4 at the plate. Tichenor scored twice and walked while hitting his fourth double of the season. The senior is hitting .372 on the year. Staton hit his eighth double and is now hitting .415 on the year. Ryan Arington (JR/Cincinnati, OH) hit his second triple of the season. Ethan Harrison (FR/Erlanger, KY) was 1-4 and scored, stole a base, and reached on a hit-by-pitch.

 

Jesse Peters (FR/Loveland, OH) started, but did not figure into the decision after going five innings and allowing seven hits, a walk, and two runs – both earned. He had one strikeout.

 

The Trojans scored one in the first for a 1-0 lead. Ethan Harrison scored on a wild pitch. Harrison was hit by the first pitch of the game and proceeded to steal second.

 

The Railsplitters tied the game with a run in the second and pulled ahead 2-1 with a run in the third.

 

Trevecca tied the game again with a run in the fourth on a solo home run from Micah Blount.

 

Trevecca pulled ahead 4-2 with a two-run sixth. Bryson Shelton (JR/Powell, TN) drove in Tyler Tichenor with a single and Zach Tompkins (SR/Mt. Juliet, TN) reached on a error by the left fielder which scored Shelton.

 

LMU scored two in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings tied 4-4.

 

Trevecca regained the lead and the winning run in the top of the 10th when Tyler Tichenor scored on a wild pitch. Tichenor reached on a walk then stole second and advanced to third on a error by the catcher.

 

Trevecca collected nine hits and had one error while LMU had 12 hits and two errors.

 

Mac Barnes (SO/Arlington, TN) picked up his first win (1-0) of the year to add to his two saves. He pitched the bottom of the 10th for the Trojans and allowed two walks and had a strikeout.
