Trevecca Softball | Drops in Extra Innings, Run Rules to Split with Davis & Elkins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In the first double header of a series against G-MAC opponent Davis & Elkins College (16-8, 2-2 G-MAC) on Friday, Trevecca Nazarene (21-13, 5-1 G-MAC) went into eleven innings in game one to fall 2-3 and came back to run rule in game two, 10-0 in five. Trevecca is now 7-1 in the all-time series over Davis & Elkins.

The series continues with a double header on Saturday, March 26 starting at 11 AM. The Trojans will host Kentucky Wesleyan College (4-17, 1-2 G-MAC) for a double header on Wednesday, March 30 at 4 PM. TNU leads the all-time series, 10-7.

GAME ONE

TNU plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning but Davis & Elkins tied it up quickly with a run in the top of the third. Four more scoreless innings would draw extra before D&E took the lead in the ninth. A lead off homer tied it again in the bottom. Despite an international tiebreaker going into effect in the tenth inning, it was in the eleventh that D&E plated the final run and held off the Trojans to take the game, 3-2.

Jordan Griner (SR/Mulberry, Tenn.) started the action in the bottom of the second with a single to left field. Kat Burbrink (SO/Hamilton, Ohio) sacrificed the bunt to get Griner in scoring position. Griner scored on a Kaitlyn Crumpler single to put TNU on the board, 1-0.

D&E's Manson hit a double to get on base and back to back singles sent her in to tie it at 1-1.

Despite each team swinging a pair of hits through the next five innings, TNU left three base runners stranded and D&E left one, to remain scoreless through the eighth.

Three hits for Davis & Elkins in the top of the ninth generated one run to show signs of an end but Jordan Griner stepped up to the plate and sent out a homer to tie it right back and reset the game, 2-2.

The tenth inning warranted an international tiebreaker which places a runner on second. The Senators sacrificed their batter to advance the runner at third but then Alex Richardson (JR/Ten Mile, Tenn.) made the fly ball catch in right field and shot it in to Griner at home for the double play to shut it down.

The Trojans followed suit with a lead off sacrifice bunt but Danielle Tyson (SO/Smithville, Tenn.) got caught in a rundown between third and home. One more out led to an eleventh inning.

Once again, the sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third for Davis & Elkins. This time it was a sacrifice fly into left field that sent the runner home, 3-2.

With Andrews at second, it was a SAC bunt again, this time from Caitlin Hudgins, before Fagan came in to pinch hit and defend her own cause. She put down the bunt but D&E's first baseman made the play at home for out two. It was a controversial call between first and second, that led to Kelsie Craighead (SO/Mt. Juliet, TN) being called out on a tag that ended the game leaving the Trojans wanting.

Jordan Griner was 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Shelby Andrews (SR/Dyersburg, Tenn.) was 3-for-5 with a stolen base.

Haley Fagan (SR/Cornersville, Tenn.) (13-9) pitched all eleven innings for a complete game including eight strikeouts. She let three runs on eight hits and only walked one out of 36 batters faced.

GAME TWO

Trevecca didn't waste any time in game two. They plated four in the first, two in the second and four in the third to run rule Davis & Elkins, 10-0, in five innings.

Ansley Brantley (SR/Kite, Ga.) busted it open with a lead off triple. A Tana Whited (FR/Lebanon, TN) single sent Brantley home. Alex Richardson followed with a single which retired Lapallo for Davis & Elkins and brought a new pitcher. That was nothing for Shelby Andrews who brought Whited home with a single down the middle, 2-0. Hudgins laid down the SAC bunt to advance the runners, Tyson, who pinch ran for Andrews, now on second and Richardson on third. Mary Collins (FR/Collierville, TN) connected for a two RBI single to put the Trojans up, 4-0, after one complete.

After three up, three down in the top of the second for Davis & Elkins, Burbrink started it off with a single. Crumpler hit a single, too before Brantley sacrificed the bunt to advance both runners. Burbrink now on third, Crumpler on second, both ran home on a Whited single for a 6-0 lead after two.

Another three up, three down in the top of the third for D&E brought up Hudgins who hit a single to center field. Maddox Reid came in to pinch run and made her way to second when D&E's Krystynak walked Mary Collins. Then Griner took a bag as well to load the bases for TNU. A Burbrink single brought in Reid and another pitcher for the Senators. Brantley connected for a hit to drive in Collins and Griner while pushing Burbrink to third to make it a double and put TNU up, 10-0.

Despite Davis & Elkins connecting their two hits of the game over the fourth and fifth innings, the TNU defense held the Senators runless after five to take the game, 10-0.

Ansley Brantley and Mary Collins were both 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run. Kat Burbrink was 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Tana Whited was 2-for-3 with four RBI and one run. Kaitlyn Crumpler was 1-for-1 with one run.

Haley Fagan (14-9) pitched three perfect innings facing nine batters. Morgan Powell (FR/Mt. Juliet, TN) pitched the final two with two strikeouts and let two hits.
