Trevecca Softball | Wins over Sioux Falls, Ohio Dominican to Close Out THE Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. - In their final day of games over spring break, the Trevecca women's softball team (11-11) defeated the University of Sioux Falls (12-5) in a noon game, 6-3. Game two of the day was a 3-2 win over Ohio Dominican University (7-11), closing out the PFX THE Spring Games for the Trojans. 

 

The Trojans return home and will host Lee University (11-15) on Wednesday, March 16 at 2 PM. The two are 3-3 in the all-time series since moving to NCAA Division II play. TNU split the most recent double header last season on March 25, with an 8-4 win and a 4-3 loss.

 

UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX-FALLS RECAP

The Trojans took an early lead over Sioux-Falls plating the first two runs in the bottom of the first inning. They added three more runs in the third inning and Sioux-Falls brought in two during the fifth. TNU scored their final run in the sixth inning and the Cougars brought in the final run of the game in the seventh inning. 

 

Shelby Andrews (SR/Dyersburg, Tenn.) hit a two-out double to drive in Tana Whited (FR/Lebanon, TN), who singled prior, to score the first run of the game. Caitlin Hudgins hit a single into right field to bring Andrews home and the Trojans took the lead, 2-0, after the first full inning.

 

After a scoreless top of the third inning, Ansley Brantley (SR/Kite, Ga.) led things off with a single and then stole second to get in scoring position in the fourth. Whited produced a double to bring Brantley home and a 3-0 TNU lead. Andrews sacrificed with a bunt to put Whited on third and she scored on a Hudgins double, for a 4-0 Trojan lead. Mary Collins (FR/Collierville, TN) drove Hudgins home with a single to left field for a 5-0 Trojan lead.

 

Sioux Falls brought in two runs on three hits in the fifth inning.

 

Mary Collins hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning to bring in the final TNU run and a 6-2 Trojan lead.

 

After one final Sioux Falls run in the seventh inning, TNU took the win, 6-3.

 

Tana Whited was 2-for-3 with two runs, one RBI. Mary Collins was 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI. Shelby Andrews was 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run. 

 

Haley Fagan (SR/Cornersville, Tenn.) pitched four innings with three strikeouts to earn the win (8-6). Morgan Powell (FR/Mt. Juliet, TN) pitched the final three innings with two strikeouts. 

 

OHIO DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY RECAP

Ohio Dominican scored their lone two runs in the first inning, taking an early 2-0 lead. TNU brought home three runs in the fifth inning, taking a 3-2 lead and eventually the win.

 

With four hits in the first inning, Ohio Dominican took a quick lead, 2-0.

 

After only two hits over first four innings, the Trojans got a single from Jordan Griner (SR/Mulberry, Tenn.) to start things off in the fifth. Caitlin Hudgins took a bag after getting hit by a pitch and Kat Burbrink (SO/Hamilton, Ohio) sacrificed with a bunt to advance both runners and put the Trojans in scoring position. Ansley Brantley hit a single to bring in Griner and get the first run for the Purple and White. Then she stole second. A two-run double from Tana Whited brought in Hudgins and Brantley to take the 3-2 lead and the win for TNU. 

 

Haley Fagan (8-6) pitched a complete game for the win with six strikeouts. She let two runs on five hits with four walks.

 

Tana White was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base. Jordan Griner was 1-for-1 with two walks and a run.
