Trevecca Softball | Split again at PFX THE Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Trevecca Nazarene University Trojan softball team (9-11) split its two games at THE Spring Games at the Legends Way Ballfields, hosted by PFX Athletics. Grand Valley State (11-1) defeated the Trojans 4-3 in the early morning game. Trevecca responded by shutting out Ashland University (6-7) 5-0 in the mid-morning game.

 

Both opponents are in-region foes.

 

On Friday Trevecca concludes play with a noon game against the University of Sioux Falls and a 2 PM game against Ohio Dominican University. 

 

GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY LAKERS RECAP

The Lakers plated two runs in the top of the second inning after opening the frame drawing back-to-back walks. A triple down the right field line pushed home both freebies for a 2-0 Laker lead.
 
GVSU added another run in the fourth inning on consecutive doubles for a 3-0 in GVSU lead.

 

The Laker lead grew to 4-0 when a Trevecca error helped the Lakers add to their lead.

 

Caitlyn Hudgins (FR/Springfield, TN) reached on a hit-by-pitch to open the seventh for the Trojans. Morgan Powell (FR/Mt. Juliet, TN) pinch ran for Hudgins. Tana Whited (FR/Lebanon, TN) singled up the middle, moving Hudgins to second. Jordan Griner (SR/Mulberry, Tenn.) singled through the right side, driving Powell across the plate for the Trojans first run. Griner advanced to second, Whited to third on a ground out. An out later, Ansley Brantley (SR/Kite, Ga.) singled down the left field line, pushing both runners across the plate. Brantley, the potential tying run, stole second, but the Trojans rally stalled there, giving GVSU the win.

 

Ansley Brantley went 1-3 with two RBI, a stolen base, and reached on a hit-by-pitch. Jordan Griner had a 2-3 day at the plate with a run and RBI.

 

Haley Fagan (SR/Cornersville, Tenn.) started and pitched 5.2 innings before giving way to Sammie Jo Ivy (SO/Enville, Tenn. ) for the final 1.1 innings. Fagan allowed four hits and four runs – three earned, while walking seven with six strikeouts. 

 

Trevecca scored their three runs on four hits, while drawing a walk and suffering 11 strikeouts.


Both teams had just four hits, but all four of GVSU's hits were for extra bases.

 

ASHLAND UNIVERSITY EAGLES RECAP

Trevecca had 10 hits to score their five runs and did not have an error in the field.

 

Trevecca opened the scoring with a three-run top of the second. Shelby Andrews (SR/Dyersburg, Tenn.) reached on a one-out single to the shortstop. Kaitlin Crumpler (JR/Smyrna, Tenn.) reached on a singled to center and then scored on a Kat Burbrink (SO/Hamilton, Ohio) triple. Ansley Brantley singled to drive in Burbrink for a 3-0 Trojan lead.

 

Trevecca added a single run in the fifth. Alex Richardson (JR/Ten Mile, Tenn.) doubled with one out. Richardson stole third with two outs. Caitlin Hudgins reached on an error, scoring Richardson.

 

The Trojans concluded the scoring with a run in the sixth. Kelsie Craighead (SO/Mt. Juliet, TN) singled after coming on to play for Kaitlin Crumpler at second. Sammie Jo Ivy pinch hit for Burbrink and drew a walk. An out later Tana Whited singled to score Craighead.

 

Ashland managed just three hits and had and error.

 

Haley Fagan started and picked up the win with six innings of work. Fagan allowed just one hit and three walks while striking out seven. Morgan Powell came on to pitch a scoreless seventh. Powell allowed two hits and a walk.

 

Brantley carried her hot bat in and was 2-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Kat Burbrink was 2-2 at the plate with a run scored, two RBI, and a triple. Kaitlin Crumpler was 1-2 with a run scored and Kelsie Craighead went 1-1 with a run scored in relief of Crumpler at second base. Alex Richardson was 2-3 with a run scored, a stolen base, and two doubles.
