Trevecca Softball | Trojans Split Day One of Music City Invitational

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. -  In the first ever Music City Invitational, the Trevecca Nazarene University softball team (6-6) faced future G-MAC members, Ohio Dominican University (0-5) and Hillsdale College (4-1) to open tournament play. The Trojans edged Ohio Dominican 3-2 and took the loss, 3-13, in a five inning run-rule game against Hillsdale on Friday at Drakes Creek Park. 

 

On Saturday, day two of the invitational, the Trojans face Truman State University (4-5) at 11 AM and #3 University of Indianapolis (4-0) at 1 PM at Drakes Creek Park. The Trojans most recent meetings with both teams were at last year's NCAA DII Midwest Regional hosted by UIndy, May 8-10, 2015. TNU won their meeting with Truman, 3-1, and lost both matchups in the event versus UIndy, 1-4 and 3-4. The latter came in the region championship game. 

 

GAME ONE

The Trojans plated the first run of the game in the fourth inning. ODU followed suit with a run in the top of the fifth, but TNU answered with two more runs in the bottom. The Panthers added one more in the sixth. Trojans came out on top, 3-2.

 

After three scoreless innings, the Trojans plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Caitlyn Hudgins (FR/Springfield, TN) had a single. Maddux Reid (FR/Bourbonnais, IL) came in to pinch run for Hudgins and stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored courtesy of a Kaitlin Crumpler (JR/Smyrna, Tenn.) sacrifice fly.

 

Ohio Dominican scored a run in the top of the fifth to tie the game 1-1.

 

A home run off the bat of Shelby Andrews (SR/Dyersburg, Tenn.) in the bottom of the fifth inning pushed in Alex Richardson (JR/Ten Mile, Tenn.) who singled prior and gave the Trojans the lead, 2-1. 

 

The Panthers added one more in the top of the sixth following a Trojan error. The Trojans held the Panthers there to finish, 3-2. 

 

Jordan Griner (SR/Mulberry, Tenn.) was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Shelby Andrews was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and one run. 

 

Haley Fagan (SR/Cornersville, Tenn.) (3-3) pitched all seven innings for a complete game. She allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts without walking any batters. 

 

Trevecca had six hits and one error. Ohio Dominican had four hits and no errors.

 

GAME TWO

Hillsdale took an early lead, 5-0, in the top of the first. Trevecca answered back with three in the bottom of the first. Hillsdale combined for four more runs in the fourth and added four more in the fifth, giving the Chargers the win in five, 13-3. 

 

The Chargers got off to a quick start with a three-run double by Garceau and a two-run home run by Lawrence put the Chargers up 5-0 in the first inning.

 

Danielle Tyson (SO/Smithville, Tenn.) started it off for the Trojans with a single in the bottom of the first. Tyson scored on an Andrews single. Alex Richardson, who singled prior to Andrews, advanced to third on a Hillsdale error and came home on a Tana Whited single with Andrews right behind her for Trevecca's three runs. 

 

Hillsdale scored eight more runs on eleven hits to take the game in five, 13-3.

 

Morgan Powell (FR/Mt. Juliet, TN) (1-1) pitched 0.2 innings and allowed five runs, all unearned, on three hits before handing it over to Sammie Jo Ivy (SO/Enville, Tenn. ). Ivy pitched 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits with one strikeout and walked two. Savanna Carr came in to pitch the final inning.

 

Danielle Tyson was 2-for-3 with one run. Alex Richardson was 1-for-2 with one run and a walk. Shelby Andrews was 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. 

 

Both teams had two errors. Hillsdale had 14 hits to Trevecca's five.
