Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans Beat Salem; Move into Second in G-MAC

SALEM, WVa. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (14-13, 8-3 G-MAC) won 102-82 in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) road game at Salem International University (4-21, 1-10 G-MAC) at the Tigers T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.

 

With the win and a loss by Alderson Broaddus University to Cedarville University on Thursday, Trevecca is now in sole possession of second place in the conference. With a win on Saturday, Trevecca would finish in second place in the regular season standings and earn the #2 seed at the G-MAC Tournament.

 

Trevecca plays its last regular season game of the year at Ohio Valley University in Vienna, WVa. on Saturday at 3 PM. TNU is 5-0 all-time versus OVU and defeated the Fighting Scots 90-81 at the Trojan Fieldhouse on Jan. 28.

 

The Trojans head to the 2016 Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament to be played March 3-5 (G-MAC Championship HOME) in Owensboro, Ky. at the Owensboro Sportscenter.    

 

Trevecca is 5-1 all-time versus SIU in men's basketball. Trevecca is on a four game win streak in the series and defeated the Tigers 95-77 at the Fieldhouse on Jan. 30.

 

Byron Sanford (SR/Louisville, KY) scored nine of the Trojans first 11 to put the Trojans up 11-5 with 17:14 to go in the game. Sanford would score just two more in the half, but Tyrell Corlew (SR/Louisville, KY) stepped in with 14 first half points from there. Corlew hit all four of his three-point attempts in the first half.

 

Trevecca's lead was just two (19-17) with 12:08 left in the half. Two free throws from Christopher Elliott (SR/Spring Hill, TN) and a two three-pointers from Mac Walden (SR/Versailles, KY) put the Trojans up 10 (27-17) with 10:48 left. Trevecca led 30-24 with 9:18 left, but Trevecca scored nine unanswered for a 39-24 lead. Jalen Palm (SR/Louisville, KY) score five in the run with a three-pointer included. With 3:49 left the Trojan lead grew to 19 (49-30) after a pair of Tyrell Corlew free throws. Trevecca led 54-41 at the break.

 

Trevecca opened the second half with a 10-5 advantage, pushing their lead to 18 (64-46) on a dunk by Tyrell Corlew at the 15:01 mark. The basket put Corlew at 18 points for the game. SIU cut the TNU lead to 14 (75-61) with 10:09 to play, but Mac Walden, Jalen Palm, and Percy Blade (JR/Louisville, KY) combined to score five straight and the Trojan lead reached 19 (80-61) again with 8:09 left. Trevecca's lead surged to 22 (98-76) points with 2:12 remaining on a Jacob Williams (SO/Lebanon, TN) jumper. TNU secured the win 102-82.

 

Mac Walden led Trevecca with 23 points with 5-of-7 three-point shooting. Byron Sanford scored 21 points and added six assists with three steals and five rebounds. Tyrell Corlew scored 18 points with 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range. Christopher Elliott scored 10 points with five rebounds. Jacob Williams and Percy Blade each grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Jalen Palm added six assists.

 

Trevecca shot 53% (37-70) from the field, 45% (13-29) from three-point range, and 79% (15-19) from the foul line. Trevecca outrebounded Salem 39-35. Trevecca won the second half 48-41. Trevecca had an edge in points in the paint (46-32), points off of turnovers (26-13), and fast break points (16-4).
