Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans Harness Thorobreds of Ky. State in Home Finale

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (13-13, 7-3 G-MAC) defeated Kentucky State University (11-13), 91-79, in a non-conference game at the Trojan Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

 

Trevecca hits the road for a pair of Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) games this week in West Virginia. First, is Salem International University, on Thursday at 6:30 PM. Trevecca is 4-1 versus Salem International, with three consecutive wins over the Tigers. Trevecca has scored at least 95 against SIU in the stretch, including a 95-77 win at the Fieldhouse on Jan. 30th. On Saturday at 3 PM the Purple and White play at Ohio Valley University. The Trojans are 5-0 all-time against the Scots, winning 90-81 at Trevecca on Jan. 28th.

 

Trevecca has a chance to move above .500 for the fourth time this season. After losing the season opener against Truman State University on November 13, the Trojans have been .500 three times (1-1, 9-9, 11-11) previously.

 

Trevecca is 3-1 all-time against the Thorobreds, and have a three-game win streak in the series. Trevecca is 7-2 over its last nine games.

 

Tyrell Corlew (SR/Louisville, KY) led Trevecca with 23 points after hitting five of eight from beyond the three-point arch. Corlew had three rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block while hitting 8-of-12 overall from the field and both free throws.

 

Matt Gamberoni (SR/Mulhouse, France) and Percy Blade (JR/Louisville, KY) each had 16 and Jalen Palm (SR/Louisville, KY) also scored in double figures with 11. Gamberoni added a team-high seven rebounds while Sanford and Blade has six a piece. Sanford dished out a team-high six assists. Palm led the team with three steals.

 

Trevecca hit 52% (32-61) from the field, 37% (9-24) from three-point range, and 86% (18-21) from the foul line.

 

The game was tied 39-39 at the half, as neither team could gain any significant separation. The largest lead for either team in the first half was a five-point (23-18) lead by the Trojans at the 9:35 mark. There were seven ties in the half and eight lead changes. Tyrell Corlew scored 14 in the half with four three-pointers.

 

Kevin Shaw opened the second half with a three-pointer just eight seconds in for a 42-39 Thorobred lead. The lead changed four times and the game was tied four times over the first seven minutes of the second half.

 

With 13:36 on the clock, the game was tied 52-52. Trevecca's Mac Walden (SR/Versailles, KY) connected on a three-pointer seconds later and the Trojans held the lead the rest of the way. Trevecca pushed the lead to seven (62-55) with 10:14 left in the game.

 

Still, the Trojans could not shake the Thorobreds. The TNU lead was just one (77-76) with 3:06 remaining. Trevecca outscored KSU 14-3 to the end of the game. Trevecca topped the Thorobreds by 12 (52-40) in the second half for the 91-79 win.
