Trevecca Softball | Trojans Go 4-0 @ Montevallo Falcon Frenzy

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - After late night games in day one of the Falcon Frenzy, the Trevecca Nazarene University softball team (5-1) started day two early with a pair of wins. First, the Trojans defeated Auburn University-Montgomery (2-1), 8-1, and followed that up with a 5-4 victory over McKendree University (1-7) at Montevallo's Orr Park. 

 

The Trojans are scheduled to play at home on Tuesday, Feb. 16 when they are scheduled to host Lincoln Memorial University at 1 PM. Since 2011, Trevecca is 2-0 versus McKendree, 1-1 vs. AUM, 2-0 vs. Stillman, and now 1-0 vs. Montevallo. 

 

Shelby Andrews is hitting .455 through the first six games of the year. Andrews is 10-for-22 with seven runs scored, two doubles, a triples, three home runs, and eight RBI.

 

AUBURN MONTGOMERY RECAP

A Shelby Andrews (SR/Dyersburg, Tenn.) single advanced Ansley Brantley (SR/Kite, Ga.) to scoring position in the first inning after reaching on a single and stealing second. It was a wild pitch that would bring Brantley in to put the first run on the board and give the Trojans the lead, 1-0. 

 

TNU doubled that in the top of the second inning. After a trio of si! ngles, Caitlyn Hudgins (FR/Springfield, TN) was in position to score. With help from AUM pitcher, Kayla Hale, Hudgins dove in on a wild pitch and both runners, Tana Whited (FR/Lebanon, TN) and Kat Burbrink (SO/Hamilton, Ohio), advanced. A Brantley double brought Burbrink in to increase the Trojan lead to 3-0. 

 

Andrews scored in the third inning on a Jordan Griner (SR/Mulberry, Tenn.) single. Mary Collins (FR/Collierville, TN) followed her in. Griner came in on a Burbrink tri! ple. Burbrink scored on a Whited single. TNU has four runs on four hits with two AUM errors for their highest scoring inning.

 

After holding the Warhawks scoreless through two, AUM brought in their first and only run in the bottom of the third. 

 

The Trojans had a great defensive inning in the bottom of the fourth. Haley Fagan (SR/Cornersville, Tenn.) got the strikeout for out number one with the bases. Then she grabbed a line drive without flinching and sent it straight to first for the double play to shut the Warhawks down.

 

Brantley added a solo home run in the sixth after a scoreless fifth for the final run of the game, 8-1.

 

Haley Fagan pitched a complete game only letting one run with six strikeouts.

 

Both teams left 12 players on base. TNU had 13 hits, one error to AUM's seven hits and two errors.

 

MCKENDREE RECAP

Trevecca took the lead with a run in the bottom of the second, but McKendree tied the game with a run in the top of the third. Each team plated a pair of runs in the fifth. The Trojans scored the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth off of a two-run home run off the bat of Bailey Alexander (SO/Glasgow, Ky.). McKendree made things interesting with a run in the top of the seventh. 

 

Bailey Alexander was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a home run in the 5-4 win. Caitlyn Hudgins (2-2) and Kat Burbrink (2-3) also turned in multi-hit games for the Trojans. Hudgins scored two runs with two doubles and had a sacrifice hit. Burbrink added a run scored and a RBI. 

 

Morgan Powell (FR/Mt. Juliet, TN) (1-0) picked up her first career win in the circle, starting and pitching six innings of eight-hit softball. Powell scattered eight hits and allowed five walks with three strikeouts. She allowed four runs, all earned. Haley Fagan came on in relief and picked up her first save of the year. Fagan pitched one inning of nearly perfect ball, allowing just one walk with a strikeout. 

 

Trevecca scored five runs on nine hits and had three errors. The Bearcats scored four runs with eight hits and had one error.
