Trevecca Baseball | Win G-MAC Regular Season with Split at Alderson Broaddus

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (32-18, 21-3 G-MAC) split a double header with Alderson Broaddus University (31-15, 19-5 G-MAC) at Jack Funk Field, 3-6 and 14-10, which earned the Trojans their third consecutive G-MAC regular season title. The game two win for Trevecca came in extra innings.

 

Trevecca will earned the top seed at next week's (May 6-9) G-MAC Championships. For the second year in a row, the postseason championship will be Mason, Ohio at Prasco Park and Legacy Field.

Trevecca will play the sixth seed, Salem International University, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Prasco Park. The only other seed confirmed is Alderson Broaddus, the Battlers are the #2 seed.

 

GAME ONE

The Battlers gained control of game one in the bottom of the first with five runs. ABU batters delivered five singles, drew a walks, and had a batter reach on an error. When Luke Shiflett reached on a single, there were two outs and the bases were empty. 

 

ABU added their final run in the second and led 6-0.

 

Trevecca scored a single run in the top of the fifth and two more in the sixth.

 

In the fifth, Trevecca's Cameron Boyett (JR/Rockvale, Tenn.) reached on an error and later scored when Tyler Tichenor (JR/Centertown, Ky) grounded into a double play that also erased Clayton Nichols (SR/Franklin, Tenn.). Nichols reached on a single that moved Boyett to third.

 

Bryson Shelton (SO/Powell, Tenn. ) reached on a one-out four-pitch walk in the sixth. Ethan Hurt (SO/Pegram, Tenn.) doubled, moving Shelton to third. Hurt was picked off, just ahead of a Micah Blount (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) triple that scored Shelton. Chad Sutton (FR/Independence, Mo.) followed with a double that scored Blount.

 

Each team had seven hits and two errors.

 

Bryan Smith (SO/Unionville, Tenn) (7-1) took the loss, his first of the year. He allowed six runs – two earned. Smith had three strikeouts and allowed seven hits and two walks. Tyler Stage (6-2) earned the win with a complete game.

 

Trevecca left six runners on base and hit just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. ABU hit 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

 

GAME TWO

The wild second game and conference championship deciding game started with neither team scoring in the first.

 

In the bottom of the second inning ABU scored four times. They did so on two hits, three walks, and a Trojan error.

 

Trevecca doubled that four-run inning with an eight-run top of the third and led 8-4.

 

The Battlers scored a run in the bottom of the third, to make it 8-5 Trevecca. The Trojan bats produced five hits and benefitted from three Battler errors. The first three Trojan batters reached by way of a hit. Chat Sutton and Clayton Nichols led off with back-to-back singles, then Tyler Tichenor drove them in with a double. Carter Wiseman (FR/Hendersonville, Tenn.) reached on an error, scoring Tichenor. Hunter Newman (JR/Chapmansboro, Tenn.) singled, scoring Wiseman. Bryson Shelton reached on an error, scoring Newman. Ethan Hurt was hit bay a pitch and Zach Tompkins (JR/Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) reached on a throwing error, the error allowed Hurt and Shelton to score. Micah Blount grounded out, but drove in Tompkins. Sutton batted again and singled, but was thrown out trying to advance. Trevecca sent 11 men to the plate in the inning.

 

Trevecca plated two more runs in the top of the fourth and led 10-5. Tichenor and Newman singled and scored on an Hurt single.

 

ABU didn't rest and added two runs in their half of the fourth and trailed just 10-7 after four.

 

The scoreboard stayed silent for the next three innings, but would light up again in the ABU eighth and ninth inning at bats. The Battlers scored twice in the eighth and once in the ninth, tying the game at 10-10 and sending it to extra innings.

 

The two-run eighth for ABU included a four singles and two errors. In the ninth, Cody Cowart struck out swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch and advanced to second on a throwing error. A SAC bunt moved him to third and then scored on a fielders choice.

 

Trevecca turned up the heat in the top of the 10th with a four run at bat and then held ABU scoreless in the bottom half of the inning for the 14-10 win.

 

Nichols drew a one-out walk and Tichenor singled just before a Wiseman double that scored Nichols. Shelton hit a SAC Fly, scoring Tichenor. Newman was intentionally walked and an out later Hurt singled to score Wiseman. Tompkins followed with a single, scoring Newman.

 

 Tyler Tichenor had a four-hit effort with three runs scored and two RBI. The second baseman also drew a walk and a double and a stolen base.

 

Jared Jones started, but pitched just 1.2 innings, giving up four runs – two earned. Mason Dunn (JR/Goodlettsville, Tenn.) (1-0) got the win in relief, pitching the final 1.2. Austin Sisk (JR/Kodak, Tenn. ) carried the majority of the load for the four Trojan pitchers; he pitched five innings, giving up three runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Sisk threw 58 pitches and 48 for strike. Dunn threw 29 pitches with 21 for strikes.
