Trevecca Baseball | Friday Split Sets Up Championship Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (31-17, 20-2 G-MAC) split a double-header at Alderson Broaddus University (30-14, 18-4 G-MAC), falling 5-4, in nine-innings, in game one and taking game two, in seven innings, 3-2 at Jack Funk Field.

The split sets up a key double-header on Saturday when the 2015 G-MAC Regular Season Champion and top seed at next week's conference tournament will be decided.

A Trevecca win in either Saturday game will give TNU the regular season title and the top seed at next week's conference championships. A sweep of the two Saturday games by ABU puts the championship in their trophy case and the top seed at the conference tournament.

GAME ONE

With the 5-4 walk-off victory in the opener the Alderson Broaddus won their 30th game of the season, setting the single-season wins record.

With the score tied 4-4 in the ninth, Brandon Quay led off with a single. After Deonte Settles sacrificed Quay to second Brandon Gignac drew a walk. Luke Shiflett singled to load the bases, before Marquis Collier hit a sac fly to left field to give AB the victory.

In the top of the ninth, Trevecca pushed across a pair of runs to tie the game 4-4. Chad Sutton (FR/Independence, Mo.) delivered the big hit, an RBI triple to right, before scoring on a Tyler Tichenor (JR/Centertown, Ky) double.

The Battlers got on the board first in the fourth. AB got back to back singles to start the inning and a sac bunt moved the runners to second and third. Daniel Essian plated Collier and Travis Hurley with a single through the middle.

AB extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth when Collier and Chuck Hooker knocked RBI singles.

The Trojans cut the lead in half in the sixth on a two-run homer by Ethan Hurt (SO/Pegram, Tenn.).

Trent Shaw (1-0) picked up the win in 1.2 innings of work allowing two runs, one earned. Chris Boatto pitched 7.1 innings allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts to earn a no decision.

Michael Purcell (SR/New Johnsonville, Tenn.) started, but didn't figure in the decision. Austin Sisk (JR/Kodak, Tenn. ) (5-2) relieved Purcell in the eighth and pitched 1.2 innings and allowed just two hits and a walk, but gave up the go ahead run.

Purcell pitched seven innings giving up 10 hits and a walk. The Battlers scored four earned runs on the senior who also have four strikeouts.

GAME TWO

In the night cap, Trevecca took a 2-0 lead on a Micah Blount (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) two-run single in the second and added a run in the third scoring on a bases-loaded double play for a 3-0 lead after three innings.

The Battlers Gignac reached on a single that bounced off the third base bag and moved to second on a wild pitch in the ABU half of the seventh. Shiflett singled to put runners on the corners. Collier plated Gignac with a sac fly. Hurley doubled home Shiflett to cut the lead to 3-2, but Hooker struck out to end the game.

Randy Dobnak (6-4) took the loss for the Battlers allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts in a complete game effort.

John Bolton (SO/Nolensville, Tenn.) (4-2) picked up the win with the complete game performance. Bolton didn't allow a walk, but gave up seven hits that ABU used to produce their two runs. Bolton had five strikeouts.
