Trevecca Softball | Trojans Advance to Region Finals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Trevecca Nazarene University softball team (40-9) won a pair of games on day two of the 2015 NCAA Division II Midwest Region 2 tournament at the University of Indianapolis. Trevecca defeated Truman State University (33-16) 3-1 and then moved to the championship round with a 4-0 win over Ashland University (39-10).

The Trevecca softball team is the first Trojan team to win a postseason game on the NCAA Division II Regional level. They are also the first Great Midwest Athletic Conference team to win a NCAA Division II Regional contest.

 

The TNU softball team will become the first Trevecca and G-MAC team to compete in a NCAA Division II Region Championship game on Sunday.

 

Trevecca will play the host UIndy Greyhounds (44-12) at 11:00 a.m. (CT) on Sunday in the championship game of the double elimination tournament. Trevecca will need two wins over UIndy to advance to next week's super regional. The Hounds have won both of their games at the regional while Trevecca lost 3-1 to UIndy in the first game of the tournament on Friday.

GAME ONE

Trevecca won their first elimination game of the tournament, 3-1, over Truman State.

 

Trevecca scored twice in the first, before both teams scored a run in the third for the only scoring in the game as the Trojans made it stand up to advance.

 

Danielle Tyson (FR/Smithville, Tenn.) led off the game with a bunt-single to the pitcher, but was out at second when Kelsey Kemp (SR/Lawrenceburg, Tenn.) reached on a fielder's choice. Lindsey Stephens (SR/Somerset, Ky.) reached on a double that scored Kemp. Stephens moved to third on a throwing error. Mackenzie Leding reached on a fielder's choice SAC bunt that scored Stephens. 

 

Truman's Lex Van Nostrand doubled home Riley Cook in the top of the third to briefly cut the Trojan lead to 2-1; however, Trevecca responded with a run of their own in the home half to maintain a two-run lead.

 

Lindsey Stephens led off the third with a double. Mackenzie Leding (SR/Springfield, Tenn.) reached on a fielding error, which also moved Stephens to third. An out later, Bailey Alexander (FR/Glasgow, Ky.) singled to left, driving in Stephens.

 

Truman had five hits on the day. Kindra Henze (16-10) started and gave up three earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. Kelsea Dorsey came on in relief and pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless ball.

 

Haley Fagan (JR/Cornersville, Tenn.) improved to 22-5 on the year with the complete game five-hitter. Fagan walked four and had four strikeouts.

 

Stephens had two doubles with two runs scored and an RBI. Bailey Alexander had two hits and the other double and added an RBI. Danielle Tyson also had two hits and drew a walk.

 

GAME TWO

Trevecca ended the Eagles' best single-season winning percentage in 17 years with the 4-0 victory. 

 

Trevecca limited the Eagle offense to just three hits while the Trojans collected four runs on six hits off of Ashland hurlers.

 

The Trojans first two runs came in the second inning after Ansley Brantley (JR/Kite, Ga.) reached on a lead-off walk. Bailey Alexander singled, moving Brantley to second. Shelby Andrews (JR/Dyersburg, Tenn.) moved both runners up a base with a SAC bunt. Haley Fagan aided her own cause in the circle with an RBI-single that scored Brantley. Kat Burbrink (FR/Hamilton, Ohio) reached on a fielder's choice bunt that resulted in Alexander being out at home. Danielle Tyson reached on an error that scored Fagan.

 

Trevecca plated two more runs in the fifth as Danielle Tyson led off with a single. Two batters later a double by Lindsey Stephens, the 2015 G-MAC Offensive Player of the Year, put runners on second and third for the Trojans. Mackenzie Leding drove both base runners in with a two-RBI double to center field, putting the Trojans up 4-0.

 

The Eagles threatened last in the sixth when Jenny Raguz led off the inning with a double just inside the right-field line. She moved to third base, but was left there after three consecutive Trojan putouts.

 

Mackenzie Leding drove in two runs. Leding, Lindsey Stephens, and Shelby Andrews all doubled for Trevecca. Andrews also reached on a hit-by-pitch.

 

Haley Fagan is now 23-5 after pitching another complete game, this time in shutout fashion with only three hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Fagan only faced 23 batters and threw 69 pitches, 47 for strikes.

 

Fagan now has 22 complete games and 11 shutouts. She has pitched 179 innings with 168 strikeouts and only 30 earned runs.

 

Fagan's earned run average is now 1.17 on the year.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

The winner of the Midwest Region 2 (Trevecca or UIndy) will play the winner of the Midwest Region 1 tournament in a best of three series next week. The winner of the super regional advances to the NCAA Division II National Championships.

 

Rain delayed play at the Midwest Region 1 tournament and all four teams are still alive with Missouri St. Louis and Southern Indiana resuming the winners bracket game, with UMSL leading 3-0, at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Trevecca coach Ben Tyree, in his seventh season as the head coach, is 256-87-1. His teams are 46-5 in G-MAC play and are 115-25-1 all-time in conference play. Ben Tyree is 32-11 in the postseason at Trevecca


Tyree is a six-time coach of the year selection, all in the last six seasons. Twice, beginning in 2010, he was the TranSouth Athletic Conference coach of the year, was named the NCCAA MidEast Regional coach of the year in 2012, and has been selected as the G-MAC coach of the year in each of the last three seasons.
 
This is the 24th season of Trevecca softball. All-time, Trevecca softball is 704-443-2. In conference play, Trevecca is 275-174 in conference play all-time.
