Trevecca Softball | Advance to Championship Saturday @ G-MAC

Box Score

XENIA, Ohio - The top-seeded Trevecca Nazarene University (37-8) softball team advanced to the 2015 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship round with a 2-1 nine-inning win over fourth-seeded Davis & Elkins College (21-22) on Friday at the Athletes in Action Sports Complex outside of Cincinnati.

Trevecca will play Cedarville University on Championship Saturday at 11 a.m. A win by Trevecca in the 11 a.m. game will give Trevecca their third-consecutive championship. A win by the Yellow Jackets would force a second championship game immediately following game one. The winner of that If Necessary Game, would be the 2015 G-MAC Tournament Champion.

Trevecca won it in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Shelby Andrews (JR/Dyersburg, Tenn.), scoring Kelsey Kemp (SR/Lawrenceburg, Tenn.) who had doubled previously to lead off the inning.

Trevecca hurler Haley Fagan (JR/Cornersville, Tenn.) (20-4), the two-time G-MAC Pitcher of the Year, was spectacular with nine innings of work. She lowered her season earned run average to 1.07 and had 12 strikeouts while throwing 75% of her pitches for strikes (111 strikes in 147 pitches). Fagan, who is the six-time G-MAC Pitcher of the Week, allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter.

D&E scored a single run in the top of the first. The Senators Kayla Whoolery singled to lead off the inning. Ashley Dove reached on a fielder's choice, but Whoolery was out. Dove moved to second on a throwing error. Taylor Norton reached on a hit-by-pitch. With two out Katelyn Norton singled to left, driving in Dove.

After facing six Senators in the first, Fagan shut them down over the next eight innings. In fact, the Senators only had two base runners over the final eight innings. D&E picked up two more hits for the only other base runner in the game.

Trevecca tied the game at 1-1 in the third, Haley Fagan led off the inning with a single on a 1-2 pitch. Kayla Richards (SO/Cedar Hill, Tenn. ) came on to run for Fagan. Richards advanced to second on a SAC bunt before Danielle Tyson (FR/Smithville, Tenn.) drove her in with a single to left center.

In the ninth for Trevecca, Kelsey Kemp doubled to lead off the inning. With one out Shelby Andrews singled to right center on a 0-2 pitch, scoring Kemp for the game winner.

Tyson was the only Trojan with more than one hit; she was 2-for-4 with an RBI. In addition to Kemp, Bailey Alexander (FR/Glasgow, Ky.) had a double.

Alexandra Lapallo (14-10) took the loss, but pitched well against the Trojans again. She allowed nine hits, but only two earned runs with no walks and three strikeouts over 8.1 innings pitched.
