Trevecca Baseball | Trojans Top Former TranSouth Rival Bulldogs 7-2

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (21-13) won a non-conference game at Union University (7-28) 7-2 on Tuesday at Fesmire Field. Hunter Newman (JR/Chapmansboro, Tenn.), the Great Midwest Athletic Conference and Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week, was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, three RBI, and hit his 14th home run of the season.

 

Trevecca will not play again until they host Lee University (20-14-1) on Tuesday, April 14 (6pm) at Jackson Field. Former Trojan baseball player Mark Brew coaches the Flames. Following his playing days Brew became an assistant for Trojan coach Dave Altopp.

 

Trevecca, winners of their last five, have won 12 of their last 14 games. The road win is their first in five tries on the road this season.

 

Union is a former TranSouth rival of the Trojans from their days in the NAIA. Union is now in the NCAA Division 2 Gulf South Conference. Trevecca's next opponent, Lee, is also a former TranSouth foe that plays in the Gulf South Conference.

 

Newman is now hitting .512 on the year with 58 RBI and 48 runs scored. Newman's home run was a solo shot that lead off the fifth.

 

Bryson Shelton (SO/Powell, Tenn. ) was 2-for-3 and drove in two with his sixth double on the year. Shelton added a stolen base and now has 15 RBI on the year. Zach Tompkins (JR/Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) scored twice and hit is third triple of the year. He also reached on a walk and successfully stole his second base of the year.

 

Trevecca scored two in the first and two in the third for a 4-0 lead. Union scored two in the bottom of the third, their only runs of the contest. Trevecca added single runs in the fourth, fifth, and eighth innings. Trevecca collected eight hits with an error.

 

Ivey Starling (JR/Brentwood, Tenn.) started and pitched three innings. He was the first of five TNU hurlers to appear in the game. Starling got the win and is now 3-1 on the year. He allowed two hits and two runs – both earned, and walked two while striking out three Bulldogs. Over the next six innings four Trojan pitchers combined to pitch one-hit baseball with no walks. The TNU arms combined for 12 strikeouts.

 

In the first Tyler Tichenor (JR/Centertown, Ky) led off the game with a double. Carter Wiseman (FR/Hendersonville, Tenn.) moved him over with a sacrifice fly. Newman picked up an RBI with a ground out to short. Nick Kristinus (FR/Murfreesboro, Tenn.) reached on a walk before Bryson Shelton drove in Newman with a double.
