Trevecca Baseball | Sweep Cedarville; Host Carson Newman Tuesday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (30-15, 19-1 G-MAC) defeated Cedarville University (17-22, 9-11 G-MAC) 18-2 and 17-14 in the final two games of the four-game series on Saturday at Jackson Field.

The Trojans will host Carson Newman University on Tuesday for a single game at 4 p.m. Trevecca is 14-2 over their last 16 games.

Trevecca played six games this week and Bryson Shelton (SO/Powell, Tenn. ) made the most of it, hitting .500 (13-for-16) for the week with 10 runs scored, five doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI, three walks, and had a stolen base. Cameron Boyett (JR/Rockvale, Tenn.) was 4-for-8 with three runs scored, a double, a triple, a home run, and two RBI.

GAME ONE
Cedarville jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run top of the first. The Yellow Jackets were held in check the rest of the way by Trevecca starter Bryan Smith (SO/Unionville, Tenn) (7-0) who pitched a complete game three-hitter. Smith allowed two walks and had four strikeouts while allowing just the two runs in the first, only one of those was earned.

Trevecca scored four in the bottom of the first to pull ahead and gave Smith plenty of confidence with a 10-run fourth inning. TNU added three in the fifth and one in the sixth. Trevecca totaled 20 hits and one error. Nine different Trojans had at least one hit. Eight different Trojans produced multi-hit games. Of the 20 hits, nine were extra base hits.

In the 10-run fourth, Trevecca used 10 hits and left just one runner on base. There were 14 Trojans that came to the plate during the inning. Chad Sutton (FR/Independence, Mo.) opened the inning with a single. Sutton later doubled in the inning, driving in two runs and scored twice. Clayton Nichols (SR/Franklin, Tenn.) batted twice in the fourth and each time he singled, drove in a run, and scored.

Bryson Shelton hit 3-for-4 with two doubles, scored twice, drew a walk, stole a base, and drove in a run.
 
GAME TWO
Jarred Jones (FR/Nicholasville, Ky.) started for Trevecca, but the win went to Ivey Starling (JR/Brentwood, Tenn.) (4-2) who pitched 2.1 innings allowing four hits, a walk, three runs – 2 earned, and sat down three on strikes.

Mason Dunn (JR/Goodlettsville, Tenn.) pitched the ninth for his second save of the year.

Cedarville took a 3-0 lead with three in the top of the first. Trevecca took a 4-3 lead with a four-run bottom of the first. In the third, CU scored four and led 7-4 until Trevecca had a 6-run fourth to take a 10-7 lead. Cedarville tied the game with a three-run fifth. TNU edged ahead with a single run in the fifth and led 11-10. Trevecca pushed ahead 16-10 with a five-run sixth. The Yellow Jackets stormed back with a four-run seventh, cutting the Trojan lead to just two, 16-14. Trevecca tacked on a single run in the eighth to produce the 17-14 final.

Eight Trojans produced at least one hit and five had multi-hit games. Bryson Shelton was 5-for-5 with five runs scored and three RBI. He added a walk and two more doubles.

Shelton was a combined 8-for-9 over the two games on Saturday.
