Box Score PHILIPPI, W.Va. - The Trevecca Nazarene University (13-15), the fifth-seed at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships, lost 68-63 to top-seeded and regular season champion Alderson Broaddus University (21-7) in the semifinals at the Rex Pyles Arena.
When Malcom Tatum, the G-MAC Player of the Year, took the opening tip and jammed to start at 10-0 run for the Battlers, it looked like ABU would ease their way to the championship game.ÂÂ
Byron Sanford (JR/Louisville, KY), Tyrell Corlew (JR/Louisville, KY), and the rest of the Trojans did not cave. In fact, the Trojans dominated the first half after that opening flurry.ÂÂ
Trevecca replied with a 9-0 run to start with and continued that trend with a 29-12 run that gave them a 29-22 lead.ÂÂ
After tying the game at 17-17 with 11:49 to go, Tyrell Corlew buried his fourth three-pointer of the first half to get the Trojans the lead for the first time (20-17) with 10:55 left in the half.ÂÂ
With 6:49 left in the half, Matt Gamberoni (JR/Mulhouse, France) scored in the paint to push Trevecca's lead to nine (34-25). Unfortunately the Battlers locked up the Trojans for the rest of the first half, limiting the visitors to just two points the rest of the half while scoring nine, cutting the Trojans lead to just two, 36-34, at the break.
Tyrell Corlew drilled his fifth three-pointer with 16:10 left in the game, giving the Trojans 45-42 lead. A moment later Byron Sanford scored to put the Trojans up 47-44 with 14:57 left. It was then that the top-seeded Battlers caught fire, scoring 11 straight to take a 55-47 lead with 9:58 to go. After Trevecca cut the lead to five (55-50), ABU pulled away by 10 (63-53) with 4:49 to go, equaling their largest lead of the game.ÂÂ
The Trojans could not fully recover from that margin this time. Trevecca did get the ABU advantage to just four points (65-61) with 1:08 remaining, but their shot had gone too cold to fully close the gap and saw the Battlers move on to the championship game with a five-point 68-63 victory.ÂÂ
ABU outscored Trevecca 16-8 in the paint in the second half. They also had a 6-0 edge in bench scoring in the final 20 minutes.ÂÂ
