Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans Advance to G-MAC Semi, 87-69 over Cedarville

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – #5 seed Trevecca men's basketball team (13-14) defeated #4 seed Cedarville University (13-16) 87-69 in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships; one day after snow pushed the tournament back 24 hours.

Trevecca will face the defending tournament champion and top-seeded and 2015 G-MAC Regular Season Champions Alderson Broaddus University (20-7) in the semifinals on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. WATCH

 

Byron Sanford (JR/Louisville, KY) and Matt Gamberoni (JR/Mulhouse, France) led Trevecca with 18 points each, Sanford, who made second team all-conference, scored all 18 of his points in the first half. Sanford scored 10 of the games first 11 points as the Trojans led 10-1 at the first media timeout.

 

Tyrell Corlew (JR/Louisville, KY) added 17 points with five three pointers while Percy Blade (SO/Louisville, KY) score 13 and Jalen Palm added 12.

In Saturday's other semifinal game #3 seed Central State University (18-11) will face #2 seed Kentucky Wesleyan (21-7) at 4 p.m. CSU defeated #6 seed Ohio Valley University (9-16) 87-81on Friday to advance.

The 2015 G-MAC Finals will be Sunday at 1 p.m. also at the Rex Pyles Arena on the ABU campus. 

 

The Trojans have won three in a row and four of their last five. The only blemish in the last five games for Trevecca came February 22 against Alderson Broaddus, Saturday s opponent in the semifinals, at the Pyles Arena, 73-62. In that game, Trevecca used a 14-4 run to take a 35-34 lead at the half. Trevecca scored the first two of the second half for a 37-34 lead, but the Battlers scored the next 13 and held off the Trojans for the win. ABU holds a 4-0 edge in the series with the Trojans.

Trevecca shot 46% (35-76) from the field, 41% (12-29) from three-point range, and were 5-of-6 from the foul line. Cedarville had a 43-42 edge in rebounding, but hit an uncharacteristic 37% (22-59) from the field, 24% (6-25) from three-point land, and 61% (19-31) from the foul line.

Gameroni added 11 rebounds for a double-double. He hit 9-of-14 from the field. Sanford was 7-14 from the field and hit both three-point attempts. He finished seven assists and eight rebounds and four steals. Blade also produced a double-double with 11 rebounds. Palm had a team-high eight assists and two steals. Corlew was 5-for-10 from three-point range.

Marcus Reineke, the Yellow Jackets leading scorer on the season, was held to six points and was 2-9 from the field. Patrick Bain (16), Leighton Smith (14) and Austin Picket (12) led CU in scoring.

Following the 10-1 start, the Trojans pushed the lead to 16 (28-12) with 9:03 remaining in the half. The Yellow Jackets were able to cut the lead to five by the half and trailed 39-34.

Trevecca outscored Cedarville 16-5 to start the second half and led by 16 (55-39) with 15:41 to go. Corlew, Palm, and Blade all hit three-pointers for Trevecca in the run, Corlew hit two. Palm hit a jumper with 10:38 to go, putting the Trojans up by their largest margin, 22, and the game appeared on ice. The Yellow Jackets never cut the lead inside of 11 the rest of the way and the Trojans advanced with the 87-69 victory.

Matt Gamberoni led an 20-14 advantage in the paint in the second half with 14 points in the final 20 minutes.
