Trevecca Softball | Earns Split at Lee University

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University softball team (11-5) split a double-header at Lee University (19-12, 3-0 G-MAC), 3-4, 8-4 on Wednesday at Butler Field. Lee scored a run in their final at bat in game one to break a 3-3 tie, but Trevecca used a six-run third inning to win game two by doubling up the Flames.

 

Trevecca returns to conference play when they put their 3-0 G-MAC record on the line against visiting Ursuline College. The Trojans and Arrows will play two games on Friday beginning at 2 p.m. and will play a single game Saturday at 11 a.m.

 

GAME ONE

Lee scored two runs in the first and another run in the third for a 3-0 lead on Trevecca starter Haley Fagan (JR/Cornersville, Tenn.). Fagan turned in three consecutive scoreless innings before the Flames scored the winning run on the 2014 G-MAC Pitcher of the Year in the seventh. Meanwhile, Trevecca rallied in support of Fagan to tie the game at 3-3. Trevecca scored a run on starter Leigh Beatenbough in the fifth and then chased her in the sixth before the starter could record an out. Trevecca not only tagged Beatenbough with a run, but reliever Angie Hughes gave up a run to TNU in the two-run Trojan sixth.

 

The loss snaps a six-game win streak by the Trojans. Trevecca is 9-2 over their last 11 games.

 

Fagan (6-2) pitched 6.2 innings while giving up five hits, four runs – three earned, and four walks while striking out four. Hughes (9-4) picked up the win with two innings of work that included a Trojan hit, a run, two walks, and four strikeouts.

 

No Trojan had more than one hit as the Trojans were limited to just five total hits. Mackenzie Leding (SR/Springfield, Tenn.) hit her fourth home run and Shelby Andrews (JR/Dyersburg, Tenn.) connected on her third, both were solo shots. Ledding reached two other times on walks.

 

Trevecca left a total of eight runners on base, including missing a chance to score with the bases loaded and just two out in the fourth.

 

Andrews led off the fifth with a solo home run.

 

Leding led off the sixth with a solo home run. Lindsey Stephens (SR/Somerset, Ky.) reached on a walk and later scored on a Alex Richardson (SO/Ten Mile, Tenn.) single.

 

GAME TWO

Lee took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first, but Trevecca broke the game open with a six-run third. Lee made it a 6-4 game with a three-run third. Trevecca tacked on the final two runs scored in the game in their half of the sixth. Trevecca pounded out 13 hits and both teams had three errors.

 

Kelsey Kemp (SR/Lawrenceburg, Tenn.) (2-4), Alex Richardson (2-2), and Shelby Andrews (2-3) all collected two hits. Lindsey Stephens and Kaitlin Crumpler (SO/Smyrna, Tenn.) both were 1-3 at the plate with two RBI. Kemp scored twice and had a RBI. Brantley, Kemp, Stephens, and Andrews all connected for a double. Brantley picked up two more steals and Kemp and Stephens also worked the Flames for an extra base with a steal.

 

Lindsey Stephens (3-3) came on to get the win in the circle in relief of starter Kelsey Kemp. Angie Hughes, who won game one, took the loss in game two giving up 5 unearned runs on four this with two walks and three strikeouts.

 

In the sixth Brantley reached on an error. An out later Kemp singled to score Brantley who had advanced to third with a steal and a sac bunt from Bailey Alexander (FR/Glasgow, Ky.). With two out Stephens doubled to score Kemp. Richardson walked and Kat Burbrink (FR/Hamilton, Ohio) was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Stephens scored on a passed ball. Andrews walked to re-load the bases. Crumpler singled scoring two. Brantley doubled for the final run of the inning.

 

NOTES

Kelsey Kemp now has a team-high eight doubles and seven steals while Brantley tops the team with six home runs. Kemp and Brantley each have 18 RBI.

 

Trevecca's 13 hits in game two is the most in a game all season.

 

The four stolen bases in the second game equals the season best reached in two previous games.

 

Trevecca left eight runners on base in both games.
