Baseball | Trevecca Sweeps Series with Alderson Broaddus

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (38-10, 20-4 G-MAC) swept two games today against Alderson Broaddus University (26-18, 15-9 G-MAC), winning 10-0 and 13-10. In doing so the Trojans took all four games in the series and secured the top seed in next week's Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships.

 

Trevecca's 38 wins this season is the most for a Trojan team since the 2007 team won 44 games for coach Chris Collins. The 2007 team finished the season 44-17-1.

 

Nick Howell (SR/Hendersonville, Tenn.) recently set the Trevecca season record for triples in a season and now owns the career record. Howell hit his 12th triple of the season in game two and now has 18 career triples, best in program history. Howell passed former Trojan Chris Lowe for the program record. Lowe hit 17 from 2006-2009.

 

GAME ONE

Trevecca scratched a run in the first and second innings, and then added two in the fourth and six in the fifth for a 10-0 win in the 7-inning game. Trevecca pounded out 16 hits and didn't commit an error.

 

Freshman John Bolton (FR/Nolensville, Tenn.) (6-1) continued his impressive inaugural campaign by allowing just three hits in the complete game shutout. He sat seven Battlers down on strikes without giving up any walks.

 

There were six Trojans with multiple hits led by Tyler Tichenor (SO/Centertown, Ky)'s 3-for-4 effort which included a double, two runs scored, and two RBI. Hunter Newman (SO/Chapmansboro, Tenn.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBI, a double, and a triple. Ethan Hurt (FR/Pegram, Tenn.) was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

 

In Trevecca's six-run fifth the team had seven hits Jeffrey Scarritt (SO/Spring Hill, Tenn.) led off the inning with a single. Bryson Shelton (FR/Powell, Tenn. ) did the same in the next at bat and an out later Ryan Arington (FR/Cincinnati, Ohio) singled to score Scarritt. Tad Wagner stepped in next and produced a two-RBI single to center field. An out later, Tichenor roped a double that scored Wagner. Hunter Newman continued the damage with a two-out double that scored Tichenor. Newman scored when Luke Fennell (SR/Franklin, Tenn.) doubled to close out the scoring.

 

GAME TWO

The offense continued in game two for the Trojans, but the Battlers bats awoke as well. The teams combined for 26 hits and 23 runs.

 

Alderson Broaddus scored first with a three-run top of the first. Trevecca scored a single run in the first and second inning, then briefly took a 4-3 lead with a two-run third. The Battlers did just that with a six-run fourth and put the Trojans on alert with a 9-4 lead. Trevecca rallied to tie the game at 9-9 with three in the fifth and two in the sixth. In the seventh the Trojans took the lead for good with four runs. The Battlers added one final run in the eighth.

 

In the seventh inning Trevecca score four runs with just two hits. With one out Tadd Wagner (SR/Carthage, Mo.), Nick Howell, and Tyler Tichenor drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Wagner scored when Hunter Newman was hit by a pitch in the next at bat. Fennell followed with a single that scored Howell and Tichenor. Shelton hit a double in the next at bat to drive in the fourth and final run of the inning. 

 

Hunter Newman carried a hot bat into game two, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored, two RBI, a double, and another triple. Luke Fennell put in a 3-for-4 game with a run scored, five RBI, and two doubles. Tichenor was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a stolen base, and a double. Bryson Shelton was 2-for-4 with a run scored, a double, and two RBI. Ethan Hurt turned in a 2-for-3 game with a run scored, an RBI, and two stolen bases.

 

Michael Donaldson (SR/Dickson, Tenn.) (2-2) picked up the win in relief. Donaldson pitched three innings and allowed four hits and one run – unearned while striking out two. Ryan Shultz (FR/Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Justin Daily combined for two and a third innings of perfect baseball. Both had a strikeout with Shultz pitching one and a third.

 

Next? The Trojans will be the top-seed, for the second year in a row, at the 2014 G-MAC Baseball Championships.

 

The 2014 championships are being held just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio at Prasco Park in Mason. The tournament will run from May 7-10.

 

Trevecca will first play on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. against the winner of game one (#5 seed vs. #4 seed).
