Baseball | Trevecca Claims G-MAC Regular Season Title

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (35-12, 18-4 G-MAC) captured its second consecutive Great Midwest Athletic Conference Regular Season Title Friday evening after winning a twinbill against Alderson Broaddus University (26-15, 15-7 G-MAC) 7-6 and 3-0.

TNU rallied late to win game one over the Battlers 7-6, before shutting out AB 3-0 in game two.

In a tight three-team race for the top seed for next week's G-MAC Baseball Tournament, a pair of losses by Kentucky Wesleyan College aided the Trojans earlier in the day.

GAME ONE

The Trojans jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after the first three innings.

In the bottom of the first, Hunter Newman got TNU on the board with an RBI single to left field scoring Nick Howell. Two batters later, Jeffrey Scarritt lined a shot to center field plating two more.

Trevecca pushed its lead to 5-1 as freshmen Ethan Hurt and Patrick Reed had run-scoring hits.

Alderson Broaddus would battle back in the sixth inning to take a lead.

Down 5-2, the Battlers started the frame with a Jeff Conley single. After a balk moved Conley to second, Travis Hurley and Marquis Collier had back-to-back hits that resulted in a run crossing home. Brandon Quay then drew a bases-loaded walk followed by a two-run double down the left field line by Jordan Martin. The Battlers had a 6-5 advantage.

That wouldn't faze the Trojans though.

In the eighth, Trevecca got its first three batters on base and Newman followed by being hit by pitch scoring Reed from third to tie the game at 6. Scarritt would then deliver the game-winning hit later in the frame with a single to center field.

Austin Sisk (5-1) would get the win for TNU tossing the final three innings and not allowing a hit. Michael Purcell tossed six innings and struck out eight batters.

Tyler Tichenor and Scarritt each had three hits to lead TNU. Four others had a pair of hits as well.

GAME TWO

Senior Alex Shoulders was outstanding in the nightcap allowing just one hit while striking out five in TNU's 3-0 win.  He induced seven fly-outs and eight groundouts as well.

Through the first three-and-half-innings there were just two combined hits.

That changed though in the bottom of the fourth as Trevecca got a pair of hits highlighted by Bryson Shelton's two-out RBI single to right center plating Luke Fennell to give the Trojans all the scoring it would need.

Newman added an RBI single in the sixth as did Shelton pushing TNU's lead to 3-0.

AB's lone hit came to Jordan Martin in the first at-bat of the game.

Jeff Conley did strike out nine Trevecca batters in the tough-luck loss.

Trevecca will return to action at 1:10 p.m. tomorrow against Alderson Broaddus. It will be the final home games for seniors, Luke Fennell, Michael Donaldson, Rob Rowland, Austin Huibers, Nick Howell, Tadd Wagner and Alex Shoulders. Senior Day ceremonies will take place at 12:50 p.m.
