Baseball | Trevecca Drops Alabama Huntsville 16-8

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University baseball team (23-8) defeated the University of Alabama Huntsville (22-13, 6-2 G-MAC) 16-8 in a 9-inning non-conference game at Jackson Field.

 

The game had a 33-minute delay due to lightening in the area. The delay started at 7:43 p.m.

 

Trevecca took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in their half of the second inning. The Chargers answered with two in the top of the third, but Trevecca broke the 2-2 tie with two in the bottom of the third. The game was tied at 4-4 as UAH scored two more in the top half of the fifth.

 

The course of the game changed dramatically in the sixth when the Trojans scored 11 runs. Trevecca collected eight hits including a grand slam from Hunter Newman; it is his fourth home run of the season. It is the second grand slam from the Trojans in the last week. Luke Fennell blasted one against Salem International over the weekend.

 

In the inning the Trojans had seven singles, a home run, a wild pitch, a passed ball, five walks, a stolen base, and a runner scored on an obstruction. Trevecca's first 10 batters reached base.

 

In the TNU second Jeffrey Scarritt and Bryson Shelton hit back-to-back singles setting the table for Ethan Hurt who delivered a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Scarritt. Shelton stole second and then scored on Clayton Nichols double down the left field line.  

 

Trevecca's two-run third started with a single by Newman and Fennell drew a walk to follow. An out later Shelton singled to load the bases. Hurt reached on a fielding error scoring Newman. Nichols grounded out, but scored Fennell in the process.

 

Each team plated a run in the eighth and UAH added three in the ninth for the 16-8 final.

 

The Chargers lead the series 4-1, having won the first four games in the series. Trevecca is now 17-4 in non-conference games this year and 23-6 in games played at Jackson Field.

 

The win balances a 16-9 for UAH over TNU in Huntsville on March 19. UAH is 11-6 versus non-conference opponents this season.

 

Trevecca had 15 hits and no errors while Huntsville had 12 hits and four errors.

 

Austin Sisk (3-0) picked up the win in relief and Edwin Reyes (0-2) took the loss for UAH.

 

Sisk came on to work the sixth and seventh innings and was a walk away from a perfect two innings. He added strike out. Austin Huibers started and pitched his first two innings of the year. He allowed two hits and a walk, but didn't allow a run.

 

Reyes pitched three innings beginning in the third. He allowed three hits, two runs – one earned, and two walks while striking out four.

 

Hunter Newman went 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and five RBI. He drew a walk and hit the game-changing grand slam in the 11-run sixth. Newman is hitting .361 on the season. Bryson Shelton produced a 4-for-5 night with two runs scored and a stolen base. Clayton Nichols had a 3-for-5 night at the plate with two runs scored, foru RBI, and a double.  

 

Trevecca will play its next 15 games on the road beginning with this weekend's G-MAC series at Davis & Elkins College (8-12, 1-3 G-MAC). Trevecca played 29 of its first 31 games at Jackson Field. Trevecca will play the Senators in a pair of double headers on April 5th and 6th, both days the first pitch will be at 11:00 a.m. Central.  

 

Trevecca's next home stand will be the final four games of the regular season. Trevecca will host G-MAC foe Alderson Broaddus University on May 2-3 at Jackson Field. It will be special weekend for the seniors as it will also be graduation weekend at Trevecca.
