Softball | Trevecca ends Gulf Coast trip with win

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Trevecca Nazarene University softball team (13-5) won two of three games at the Gulf Coast Invitational on Saturday.

Trevecca lost to Morningside College (3-4) 6-3 before knocking off Southeastern University (12-8) 2-0 and former TranSouth foe Blue Mountain College (8-7) 11-5.

 

Game One - Morningside College

Morning side score three in the first, two in the second, and one in the third for a 6-0 lead after there. Trevecca scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut the lead in half, but didn't scratch the scoreboard again and fell 6-3. Trevecca had just four hits and an error while Morningside used 11 hits to overcome two errors.

 

Against the Mustangs, Lindsey Stephens, also the starting pitcher for Trevecca, was the only Trojan to get more than a hit. Heather Shuler went 1-for-2 with a run scored and also reached on a walk. Kelsey Kemp had two stolen bases, an RBI, and scored. Ansley Brantley was 1-for-4 and scored a run and had a stolen base.  

 

Stephens (2-2) took the loss while going all six innings. She allowed six runs - four earned and allowed two walks while striking out four.

 

Game Two - Southeastern University

Trevecca got back on the winning track with a 2-0 win over Southeastern University. The Fire had four hits and neither team committed an error. Trevecca broke the scoreless tie with the games only two runs in the fifth. TNU had just three hits, but made them count.

 

Haley Fagan (5-2) picked up the complete game shutout win, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out eight.

 

Kelsey Kemp (1-for-2) led off the fifth with a single and Heather Shuler reached on a fielder's choice, but both runners were safe due to an error. Both runners moved to second and third on a passed ball. An out later Jordan Griner drove in Kemp when she reached on a sacrifice bunt. Shelby Andrews followed with an RBI ground out that scored Kayla Richards who pinch ran for Shuler.  

 

Game Three - Blue Mountain College

Trevecca broke out their hitting sticks in their final GCI game, scoring 11 runs on 14 hits with an error. The Toppers also picked up 11 hits, but only turned them in to five runs. A seven-run fifth inning was the key to the Trojans win.

 

Trevecca scored three in the third before BMC scored two in the fourth. Trevecca got a run back in the fourth before the Toppers made it a 4-4 game with two in the top of the fifth. Trevecca exploded for seven runs in the fifth and held the Toppers to a run in the sixth for a 11-5 win.

 

In the seventh Trevecca sent 13 batters to the plate. Lindsey Stephens and Paige Cassady singled before Jordan Griner hit a one-out 3-run homer. Shelby Andrews followed with a single and Kaitlin Crumpler walked. Alex Richardson doubled to score Andrews. Ansley Brantley and Kayla Richards walked to force in Crumpler. Lindsey Stephens reached on a fielder's choice that scored Richardson. Kelsey Kemp doubled scoring Brantley to end the run.

 

In all, Trevecca had a pair of doubles (Kemp, Richardson) and home runs (Griner, Brantley). Richardson (2-4), Brantley (2-4), Cassady (2-3), Andrews (2-2) and Crumpler (2-2) all had two hit games. Griner and Brantely delivered three RBI's apiece. Richardson had two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. Andrews also scored twice.

 

Kelsey Kemp (5-1) was the winner in the circle with five innings of work. Kemp allowed four runs on eight hits and delivered two free passes. Haley Fagan pitched the final two innings and allowed a run on three hits.
